Special Issue Call for Papers:

The development of social robots that interact with humans have become an important focus of robotics research leading to several research and industrial projects been funded.

For improved and natural human-robot cooperation, human users learn how to interact with the robot but, at the time, the robotic systems should adapt to the users. This adaptation requires learning a model of human behavior and integrating this model into the decision-making algorithm of the robot. Creating robotic systems capable of correctly model and recognize the human behavior and of adapting their behaviors to the user is a very critical and open task, especially in the domain of assistive robotics and when working with vulnerable user populations.

The aim of this Special Issue is to bring together the works of many experts in this multidisciplinary subject, that involves different competences and knowledge, which span from machine learning to user profiling and to robot behavior control. The Special Issue serves to highlight the advances from a wide-angle perspective on the topic, as well as to further stimulate excellent fundamental and applied research on compiling the state of the art in this subject.

This special issue follows the BAILAR (Behavior Adaptation, Interaction and Learning for Assistive Robotics – workshop at RO-MAN 2016, but submissions are not restricted to BAILAR contributors.

The topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

Assistive Robotics
User Profiling
Adaptive Behavior
Activity Recognition
Intention Recognition
Multi-sensor fusion
Ambient Assisted Living
HRI and Personalization
Robot Learning
Adaptive Planning

Submission deadlines

Submission period – 1-30 September 2016

First review notification – December 10th, 2016

Revision submission – January 31st, 2017

Second review notification – March 1st, 2017

Final notice of acceptance/rejection – April 1st, 2017

Submission instructions

Prospective authors are invited to upload their manuscripts during the submissions period through Papers should be prepared by adhering to the PRLetters guidelines. When uploading their papers through the online system, Authors should select the acronym “SI:UP4HRI” to make it clear that they are submitting to this SI.

Contributors will be informed that their papers should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere. If the submissions are extended works of previously published papers, the original works should be included and a description of the changes that have been made should be provided.

Guest editors will make an initial determination of the suitability and scope of all submissions.

Review process

The review process will be done by following the standard review process of PRLetters. Each paper will be reviewed by at least two experts in the field. In general, only two reviewing rounds will be possible, out of which major revision is possible only for the first round. Papers that after the 2nd reviewing round still need major revision will be most possibly rejected.

Guest Editors
