Towards Secure and Scalable Fog/Edge Computing

Special Issue Call for Papers:

In recent years, Fog Computing has appeared as a new paradigm that extends computing infrastructure to the network edges to provide computation, networking, and storage services between end devices and data centers. Fog systems are capable of processing large amounts of data locally, are fully portable, and can be installed on heterogeneous hardware. These features make the Fog platform highly suitable for time and location-sensitive applications, and it can be seen as an interface between IoT and Cloud. The extensions from cloud to Fog and Fog to IoT are not trivial, as there exist many fundamental differences emanating from the reason that Fog computing is developed. Fog computing system design and implementation are challenging, including model analysis, computing/communication/control co-optimization, architecture/algorithm/protocol design, energy consumption/delay control, workload balance/allocation, prototype test, system integration, application implementation, and many others. In addition, since Fog devices are deployed at the network edge at a much lower cost than cloud servers, they are more easily compromised and less trustworthy. Therefore, awareness of security and privacy challenges in fog computing requires a great deal of attention and in-depth exploration.

This Special Issue intends to collect cutting-edge research from both academia and industry, with emphasis on current developments and future directions in security and privacy issues of emerging fog computing. We invite authors to submit their original papers. Potential topics include:

  • Authentication, auditing and accountability in fog/edge computing
  • Edge computing architectures and solution design patterns
  • Edge computing for IoT
  • Communication and networking protocols for edge/fog environment
  • Fine-grained access control mechanism in fog/edge computing
  • Privacy-preserving computation in fog computing
  • Trust and reputation issues in fog/edge computing
  • Security architecture for fog-cloud computing
  • Key management in fog/edge computing
  • IoT communication in fog computing scenario
  • Edge/fog based data services, including distributed data centers, data analytics, caching
  • Edge/fog caching for big data
  • Quality of experience and quality of service for fog/edge computing
  • Big data analytics for workload management in edge/fog environment
  • Energy management of fog/edge infrastructure

Research articles must not have been published or submitted for publication elsewhere. All articles will be peer reviewed and accepted based on quality, originality, novelty, and relevance to the special issue theme.
