Call for Papers on the Special Issue: “Managing Future Motorway and Urban Traffic Systems”
to be published in Transportation Research Part C
The transportation sector is facing a revolution thanks to the introduction and increased penetration of new vehicle technologies (e.g. electrification), advanced automation, connectivity between vehicles and the infrastructure, and new types of mobility services (e.g. on-demand). These enablers bring many research challenges, in the planning and design of transport and mobility services, as well as in the management of resources. As Connected and Automated Vehicles (CAVs) are being progressively introduced in our transport and mobility systems, there is indeed a growing need to understand the implications and opportunities for enhanced traffic management as well as to identify innovative ways and tools to optimize traffic efficiency.
Vehicles will not only be used as means of transport, but will also act as mobile sensors, potentially becoming part of the traffic control system. This will make the management a highly complex task, given the large number of options and variables involved in the problem. It would also call for a further debate on centralized versus decentralized traffic management in the presence of CAVs – a topic that has already been attracting the attention of the research community in the last decade.
Given the above motivations and context, this Special Issue aims to collect contributions addressing in particular these research questions:
What are the new opportunities in Traffic Management enabled by automation and connectivity?
How can we address different challenges of current and future traffic management (urban and motorways)?
How can connectivity and automation support an enhanced traffic management in the future?
Scope of the special issue:
This special issue will particularly welcome studies that shed a light on scenarios where CAVs and automated mobility services will substantially penetrate the market and will be part of the traffic flow. Topics included in this issue will consider, but are not strictly limited to:
Traffic Management in the Presence of CAVs
Dynamic models for CAVs (Micro and Macroscopic level)
Traffic Management and Coordinated Systems
Advanced and Automated Public Transport Systems
Connected and Automated Mobility (e.g. DRT)
Advanced Vehicle Control and Safety Systems
Human Behavior and Acceptance in the presence of CAVs
Incident Management and Control
Multimodal Systems Modeling and Management
Advanced Urban Traffic Control with connected technologies
C-ITS applications in traffic and transport management
Network estimation and control using V2X communication
For this special issue, authors are encouraged to use Elsevier’s online multimedia tools and submit supplementary materials such as simulation code and data, video, and AudioSlides along with their manuscripts. When submitting your manuscript, please choose “MFTS” for “Article Type”. This is to ensure that your submission will be considered for this special issue instead of being handled as a regular paper.
Papers will be reviewed upon receiving in the open window (October 1st, 2020 – January 31st, 2021), and a decision for each paper will be made, as soon as the review process is complete. The paper will be formally published online once it is accepted. Therefore, early submission is encouraged for an early decision. Below are the deadlines for paper submission and reviews.
