Special Issue Call for Papers:

Aims and Scope

In the post-Moore era, it is becoming more and more difficult to achieve significant performance improvement with the scaling of CMOS technology. This is particularly a challenge for computation and memory intensive applications such as those based on image/signal processing and machine learning algorithms. However, as these applications are related to human perception, a full accuracy is not required, which makes approximate computing (AC) a promising paradigm for low power and high performance design. The potentials of AC will not be fully realized in a single layer. Therefore, applying AC in different layers of hardware, architecture, software, and algorithm should be investigated.

The aim of this special issue is to provide a forum for discussions of potential answers to the following questions:

  • How to design AC circuits and architectures with a good tradeoff between performance and accuracy?
  • How to fairly evaluate the quality of an AC system?
  • How to design AC circuits and architectures by considering cross-layer interactions for specific applications?

This special issue of AC will cover cross-layer design methodologies bridging circuit, architecture and algorithm levels. It will also include topics on emerging EDA methodologies for the design and synthesis of AC systems that implement cognitive algorithms.

Topics of interests include (but are not limited to):

  • Novel design of approximate arithmetic units
  • Approximate memory design and investigation
  • Error models of approximate circuits and architectures
  • Analysis of error propagation and accumulation in approximate circuits and architectures
  • Synthesis methods for AC circuits
  • Evaluation methods for AC systems
  • Simulator for AC circuits and architectures
  • Design automation of AC circuits and architectures
  • Hardware/software co-design of AC systems
  • Design of multiple-precision AC circuits and architectures
  • Design of reconfigurable AC circuits and architectures

Paper Submission

Papers submitted to this special issue for possible publication in Microelectronics Journal must be original and must not be under consideration for publication in any other journal or conference. Previously published or accepted conference/workshop papers must contain at least 30% new material to be considered for the special issue. All papers are to be submitted by referring to http://ees.elsevier.com/mej. During submission please select paper type “Approximate Computing” under Manuscript Category. All manuscripts must be prepared according to the journal publication guidelines which can also be found on the website provided above. Papers will be reviewed following the journal standard review process.
