Internet of medical things (IoMT) is an integration of medical devices and applications through which it connects to the healthcare information technologies over a network of interconnected devices. These devices possess the ability to generate, collect, analyze, and transfer data to perform a variety of healthcare-related services. In an IoMT environment, medical devices such as wearables and sensors continuously track end-users health information through medication-tracking systems, sensor-enabled medical wearable devices, and medical supply tracking applications. However, with the growing trend of innovation and technology, IoMT has acquired a massive number of users in recent times, and it may continue to multiply in the coming years. Already around 60% of the global healthcare organizations have successfully deployed IoMT solutions, and it is expected to grow more with global advancements. This digital transformation could potentially create a revolution in IoMT systems with a requirement for more advanced intelligent devices incorporated with accurate data collection and information processing capabilities.
Embedded systems are considerably an important area of the research and play a crucial role in the development of IoMT applications. They effectively sense the information and transfer it across the IoT networks for numerous processes. In general, embedded devices are more user friendly, and they can be easily developed, customized, and programmed based on user requirements. Some of the significant properties of embedded systems, such as reduced power consumption, lesser maintenance requirements, real-time computing facilities, and high availability act as key enablers of IoMT applications with a distinct set of innovative functionalities. Thus, bringing in advancements against this background can significantly offer IoMT-optimized solutions for the growing healthcare market with the competitive edge of opportunities.
This special issue focuses on theories, methodologies, architectures, and applications of embedded systems for IoMT applications. It further encourages the authors to make submissions on a broad range of IoMT devices, new methods of efficient information processing systems for wearables, embedded systems based on IoMT architectures, algorithms, and their novel applications in real-time practices. Papers focusing on innovative embedded devices for IoMT devices to meet the increasing global medical requirements are specially invited. Dr.Fadi Al-Turjman received his Ph.D. in computer science from Queen’s University, Kingston, Ontario, Canada, in 2011. He is a full professor and a research center director at Near East University, Nicosia, Cyprus. Prof. Al-Turjman is a leading authority in the areas of smart/intelligent, wireless, and mobile networks’ architectures, protocols, deployments, and performance evaluation. His publication history spans over 250 publications in journals, conferences, patents, books, and book chapters, in addition to numerous keynotes and plenary talks at flagship venues. He has authored and edited more than 25 books about cognition, security, and wireless sensor networks’ deployments in smart environments, published by Taylor and Francis, Elsevier, and Springer. He has received several recognitions and best papers’ awards at top international conferences. He also received the prestigious Best Research Paper Award from Elsevier Computer Communications Journal for the period 2015-2018, in addition to the Top Researcher Award for 2018 at Antalya Bilim University, Turkey. Prof. Al-Turjman has led a number of international symposia and workshops in flagship communication society conferences. Currently, he serves as an associate editor and the lead guest/associate editor for several well reputed journals, including the IEEE Communications Surveys and Tutorials (IF 22.9) and the Elsevier Sustainable Cities and Society (IF 4.7).
Dr.Walaa Hamouda received the M.A.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical and computer engineering from Queen‘s University, Kingston, ON, Canada, in 1998 and 2002, respectively. Since 2002, he has been with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Concordia University, Montreal, QC, Canada, where he is currently a Professor. Since 2006, he has been Concordia University Research Chair in communications and networking. His current research interests include single/multiuser multiple-input multiple-output communications, space-time processing, cooperative communications, wireless networks, multiuser communications, cross-layer design, and source and channel coding. He was a recipient of numerous awards, including the best paper awards of the IEEE WCNC?16, ICC 2009, and the IEEE Canada Certificate of Appreciation in 2007 and 2008. He served(ing) as the Co-Chair of the Wireless Communications and Networking conference (WCNC,19) MAC and Cross-layer Design Track, Wireless Communications Symposium of the IEEE ICC?2018, the Co-Chair of the Ad-hoc, Sensor, and Mesh Networking Symposium of the IEEE Globecom conference 2017, the Technical Co-Chair of the Fifth International Conference on Selected Topics in Mobile and Wireless Networking (MoWNet?2016), the Track Co-Chair of the Multiple Antenna and Cooperative Communications and IEEE Vehicular Technology Conference (VTC-Fall?16), the Co-Chair of the ACM Performance Evaluation of Wireless Ad Hoc, Sensor, and Ubiquitous Networks (ACMPE-WASUN?2014) 2014, the Technical Co-Chair of the Wireless Networks Symposium, 2012 Global Communications Conference, the Ad hoc, Sensor, and Mesh Networking Symposium of the 2010 ICC, and the 25th Queen?s Biennial Symposium on Communications. He also served as the Track Co-Chair of the Radio Access Techniques of the 2006 IEEE VTC Fall 2006 and the Transmission Techniques of the IEEE VTC-Fall 2012. From 2005 to 2008, he was the Chair of the IEEE Montreal Chapter in Communications and Information Theory. He served as an Associate Editor for the IEEE Communications Letters and IET Wireless Sensor Systems and currently serves as an Associate Editor for the IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technology, the IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing, and the IEEE Communications Surveys and Tutorials, and IEEE Wireless Communications Letters.
Dr.Shahid Mumtaz has more than 10 years of wireless industry experience and is currently working as Senior Research Scientist at Instituto de Telecomunicações Aveiro, Portugal. Prior to his current position, he worked as Research Intern at Ericsson and Huawei Research Labs in 2005 at Karlskrona, Sweden. He received his MSc and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical & Electronic Engineering from Blekinge Institute of Technology (BTH) Karlskrona, Sweden and University of Aveiro, Portugal in 2006 and 2011, respectively. Dr Shahid research interests lie in the field of architectural enhancements to 3GPP networks (i.e., LTE-A user plan & control plan protocol stack, NAS and EPC), 5G NR related technologies, green communications, cognitive radio, cooperative networking, radio resource management, Network slicing, LAA/LTU, cross-layer design, Backhaul/fronthaul, heterogeneous networks, M2M and D2D communication, and baseband digital signal processing. Dr. Shahid has more than 150 publications in international conferences, journal papers, and book chapters. Dr. Mumtaz is a senior member of IEEE. He was awarded an “Alain Bensoussan” fellowship by ERCIM to pursue research in communication networks for one year at the VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland in 2012. He was nominated Chair for IEEE new standardization on P1932.1: Standard for Licensed/Unlicensed Spectrum Interoperability in Wireless Mobile Networks. This standardization resulted from Dr. Mumtaz’ novel idea on “WiFi in Licensed band”. He is also actively involved in 3GPP standardization on LTE release 12 onwards, along with major manufacturers. He is ACM Distinguished speaker.
Dr.Francesco Leporati was born in Parma on November 9, 1963 and graduated in Electronic Engineering from the University of Pavia in October 1988 and the title of PhD in Electronic and Computer Engineering in 1993, again at the same university. He is currently associate professor at the dip. of Computer Science and Systems of the University of Pavia where he teaches Industrial Electronics, Industrial Computer Science and Embedded Systems and Design of Digital Systems for students of the three-year and master’s degree course in Computer Engineering. Francesco Leporati’s research activity concerns the design and implementation of high performance computing architectures, in particular based on FPGA technology with application to parallel computing and application specific processors. Furthermore, he deals with signal processing, automotive applications, biomedical instrumentation, computational physics. The research projects in which Francesco Leporati was involved saw the presence of various companies (Neuricam inc., Ferrari inc., Marelli Motorsport, ST Microelectronics, …) and public research bodies. He is reviewer for several journals edited by ACM, IEEE, Elsevier and in particular he collaborates with the Editorial Committee of the magazine Microprocessors and Microsystems (Elsevier ed.) As Handling Editor in the sub-area of FPGA-based systems and applications. Francesco Leporati was General Chair of the XI IEEE / Euromicro Conference on Parallel and Distributed Processing (Mantua, February 2001), of the IEEE / Euromicro Conference on Software Engineering and Advanced Applications and on Digital System Design (SEEA / DSD) held in Parma in September 2008 and will be Program Chair of the IEEE / Euromicro on Digital Systems Design Conference to be held in Verona in August 2014. He is a member of the IEEE Computer Society and of the Euromicro Society (for which he plays the role of Director of the Italian correspondents).
