Special Issue Call for Papers:

During the past decades, autonomous systems have attracted considerable attention due to their capability of performing various operations with minimal or without human supervision. Because of the salient features of high autonomy and mobility, they are vitally important tools for numerous applications in civilian and military missions covering the areas of marine, ground, aeronautics, and aerospace. However, with the ever-increasing mission complexity, the traditional control algorithms can barely satisfy the need for high control efficiency and enhanced control performance, especially under diverse and challenging environmental conditions. In view of this, intelligent control of autonomous systems has been evolving by taking advantage of advanced technologies including neural networks, fuzzy logic systems, learning and adaptive control, model predictive control, and so on. Moreover, since the cooperative operations of multiple autonomous systems offer great advantages with improved capability and swarm intelligence, a critical trend is intelligent collaborative control of autonomous systems. Other topics such as system safety, performance optimization, fault detection and accommodation, human-machine interaction for autonomous systems are also remained to be further investigated. This Special Issue will present the recent major theoretical and technical advances of intelligent control methods for autonomous systems through simulations and experiments. The purpose of the Special Issue is to: 1) increase the control efficiency, robustness, and self-adaptation of autonomous systems to unexpected internal and external environmental changes; 2) improve the operational intelligence of single or multiple autonomous systems; 3) explore the future control strategy and mission planning for autonomous systems. The Special Issue is aimed at both academia and industry: articles presenting applications in the real case are solicited together with more academic articles with innovative theoretical aspects, but which always present at least simulations by a benchmark representative of the real case.

  • Approximate/adaptive dynamic programming for intelligent control of autonomous systems
  • Deep learning, reinforcement learning, and meta learning of autonomous systems
  • Fuzzy inference systems, artificial neural networks, and genetic algorithms for autonomous systems
  • Swarm intelligence and collaborative control of autonomous systems
  • Hybrid evolutionary systems: neurofuzzy systems, fuzzy genetic algorithm, evolutionary neurofuzzy systems, genetic learning-PSO for autonomous systems
  • Human-machine interactions and shared control autonomous systems
  • Evolutionary control of autonomous systems
  • Intelligent optimization of autonomous systems
  • Intelligent mission planning for single or multiple autonomous systems
  • Intelligent fault detection and fault-tolerant control of autonomous systems
  • Intelligent model predictive control of autonomous systems
  • Adaptive disturbance estimation, state observation of autonomous systems
  • Design, development, validation, and applications of intelligent autonomous systems

Control Engineering Practice is a premier IFAC journal that publishes papers with direct applications of profound control theory and its supporting tools in all possible areas of automation.

Brief Bios of Guest Editors

Professor Zhouhua Peng received the B.E. degree in electrical engineering and automation, the M.E. degree in power electronics and power drives, and the Ph.D. degree in control theory and control engineering from Dalian Maritime University, Dalian, China, in 2005, 2008 and 2011, respectively. In Dec. 2011, he joined the School of Marine Engineering, Dalian Maritime University, China, where he is currently a Professor with the School of Marine Electrical Engineering. From Jul. 2014 to Apr. 2018, he was a Post-doctoral Research Fellow with the School of Control Science and Engineering, Dalian University of Technology, China. From Feb. 2016 to Feb. 2018, he was a Hong Kong Scholar with the Department of Computer Science, City University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong. From Jan. 2019 to Feb. 2019 and Jul. 2019 to Aug. 2019, he was Senior Research Fellow with the Department of Computer Science, City University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong.

Professor Peng was a recipient of the Science and Technology Award (first class) from China Association of Oceanic Engineering in 2019, Liaoning Province Science and Technology Award in 2013 and 2017, the Youth Science and Technology Award from China Institute of Navigation in 2017, the Hong Kong Scholar Award in 2016, the Academic Achievement Award in Natural Science from Liaoning Province in 2013, the Excellent Doctoral Dissertation Nomination Award from Liaoning Province in 2013, the Award of Major Scientific and Technological Innovation from Transportation Department in 2018, the Award of Top 10 Major Academic Progress from Dalian Maritime University in 2018. He was appointed the Hundred, Thousand, and Ten Thousand Talent at Liaoning Province in 2016, the Youth Science and Technology Talent at the Ministry of Transport of China in 2017, the Young Science and Technology Star at Dalian in 2015, the Outstanding Young Teacher at Dalian in 2017, the Distinguished Young Science and Technology Talent at Dalian in 2018.

Professor Peng has been conducting research in the field of guidance, control, and coordination of autonomous surface/underwater vehicles. He has published more than 170 papers in refereed journals and conferences. Among these articles, 91 Journal papers are indexed by SCI and more than 30 papers are published on IEEE Transactions. Professor Peng’s research work has been cited 3479 times with h-index of 31, i10-index of 61 according to Google Scholar, and 2595 times with h-index of 29 according to Web of Science Core Collection.

Professor Peng has served as a Senior Member of IEEE, Member of Asia Pacific Neural Network Assembly, Member of Editorial Board of Chinese Journal of Ship Research in 2019, Member of the Program Committee of International Conference on Information Science and Technology in 2019 and 2016, Member of Program Committee of International Symposium on Neural Networks in 2019, 2016 and 2015, Publicity Chair of International Conference on Information, Cybernetics, and Computational Social Systems in 2017, Associate Editor of Chinese Control Conference in 2017, Member of Program Committee of International Conference on Intelligent Control and Information Processing in 2016 and 2014, Publication Chair of International Conference on Intelligent Control and Information Processing in 2014.

Professor Nian Zhang is currently a Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of the District of Columbia (UDC), Washington, D.C., USA. She received her Ph.D. degree in Computer Engineering from Missouri University of Science & Technology, USA. Her research interests include computational intelligence, machine learning, deep learning, supervised and unsupervised learning, classification, clustering, and optimization, neurodynamic optimization, and various application fields including big data science, time series prediction, biomedical engineering, and autonomous robot navigation.

Professor Zhang was awarded numerous federal grants from the National Science Foundation, Department of Defense, and National Institutes of Health as the PI/Co-PI, accumulating over $4.5 million in research grant funds. She received the UDC’s faculty recognition awards for Excellence in Research Award, Excellence in Teaching Award, and Outstanding Undergraduate Research Mentorship Award in three consecutive years.

Professor Zhang has served as an Associate Editor for the IEEE Transactions on Cybernetics, IEEE Transactions on Neural Networks and Learning Systems, and Knowledge-based Systems. She has also served on the Editorial Board for the Complex & Intelligent Systems. In addition, she served as a Guest Editor for the International Journal of Computational Intelligence Systems, Complex & Intelligent Systems, Computational Intelligence and Neuroscience, Cybernetics and Systems, International Journal on Artificial Intelligence Tools, and International Journal of Systems, Control and Communications. Furthermore, she has served as the Vice Chair of the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society (CIS) Emergent Technologies Technical Committee and the Vice Chair of the IEEE CIS Adaptive Dynamic Programming and Reinforcement Learning Technical Committee. She regularly serves as the Program Chair, Publications Chair, and Special Sessions Chair of the IEEE technically co-sponsored conferences such as ICACI, ICICIP, ICIST, and ISNN.

Professor Qing-Long Han is currently Pro Vice Chancellor (Research Quality) and a Distinguished Professor at Swinburne University of Technology, Australia. He is a Fellow of The Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (FIEEE) and a Fellow of The Institution of Engineers Australia (FIEAust). He has served as an AdCom Member of IEEE Industrial Electronics Society (IES), a Member of IEEE IES Fellows Committee (Fellow Evaluating Committee), Chair of IEEE IES Technical Committee on Network-based Control Systems and Applications.

Professor Han is a Highly Cited Researcher in both the Essential Science Indicator fields of Engineering and Computer Science by Clarivate Analytics. He is one of Australia’s Top 5 Lifetime Achievers (Research Superstars) in the discipline area of Engineering and Computer Science in The Australian’s 2020 Research Magazine, 23 September 2020, and The Australian’s 2019 Research Magazine, 25 September 2019, respectively. He was ranked No. 19 and No. 13 in the total authors (87535) within the field of Industrial Engineering & Automation for career-long citation impact up until the end of 2019 and for citation impact during the single calendar year 2019, respectively, in the Stanford University’s top 2% of the most-cited scientists.

Professor Han received The 2020 IEEE Systems, Man, and Cybernetics (SMC) Society Andrew P. Sage Best Transactions Paper Award (IEEE Transactions on Systems, Man, and Cybernetics: Systems), The 2020 IEEE Industrial Electronics Society IEEE Transactions on Industrial Informatics Outstanding Paper Award, The 2019 IEEE Systems, Man, and Cybernetics (SMC) Society Andrew P. Sage Best Transactions Paper Award  (IEEE Transactions on Cybernetics), and The IET Control Theory and Applications Premium Award in 2016. He received Vice-Chancellor’s Research Excellence Award at Swinburne University of Technology in 2020. He received The 2020 IEEE SMC Society Best Associate Editor Award for Outstanding Service as Associate Editor pf the IEEE Transactions on Cybernetics, The 2020 IEEE/CAA Journal of Automatica Sinica Outstanding Associate Editor Award for great contributions to the development of IEEE/CAA Journal of Automatica Sinica, and The Outstanding Associate Editor Award for International Journal of Automation and Computing in 2017 and 2018, respectively.
