Adding renewable energy sources to the power grid is challenging in many countries. Delivering energy from distributed variable sources to consumers, and maintaining the stability and reliability of electrical systems requires further developments and studies. This is specially challenging for photovoltaic systems due to the inherent distributed characteristics of this source, and the quick variability in the presence of clouds. Therefore, the frequency of the power grid changes faster in case of any disturbance. The zero inertia generators of photovoltaic systems make it necessary to reduce the overall inertia of the system, which would force existing conventional generators to provide torque and inertia when trying to overcome any contingency event. These instability problems should be compensated with new ideas from Smart Grid.
This special section will focus on all aspects related to the integration of photovoltaic and other renewable energy systems into existing electricity networks. The topics of interest are:
Stability of Power Systems
Distributed energy resources
Integration of Energy Storage with the Power Grid
Virtual power plants
Grid Frequency control
The guest editors will screen papers based on presentations at IREC’20 in a special session dedicated to this Special Section. These selection will be based on the alignment with the journal objectives, the reviewers comments, the response to questions and the potential for improvement. Final selection of papers invited for journal submission will be done at the end of the conference and authors will be invited soon after the conference closes.
Selected authors will be invited to submit significantly extended and revised versions, with more than 30% new content and new title, updated references, discussion, and with comments received during the IREC19 presentation included, using the CAEE web submission tool at

Guest Editors’ short bios:
Ahmad Harb receive the Ph.D. degree from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Blacksburg, Virginia, USA, in 1996, in Electrical Engineering. He was the dean of School of Natural Resources Engineering at German Jordanian University (2011-2013). Currently, he is a Professor of Energy Systems at Energy Engineering Department, German Jordanian University. He is an IEEE senior member, and is a founder and editor-in-chief of the International Journal of Modern Nonlinear Theory and Applications, (IJMNTA), USA. He has published more than 80 journal articles and conference proceedings. His research interests include power and energy system analysis and control, renewable energy systems, Integration impacts of Renewable Energy with Power Grid, modern nonlinear theory (bifurcation & chaos), linear systems, power system planning, and power electronics.
