Parallel, Distributed, and Network-Based Processing in Next-generation Embedded Systems (VSI:PDP20)

Parallel, distributed and networked-based processing systems have undergone significant changes over the past few years. These changes are often a result of cross-fertilisation of parallel and distributed technologies with other rapidly evolving technologies. With the introduction of new architectures, methodologies and application areas, these systems are emerging with a potential for high economic, societal and industrial impact. On the one hand, it is of paramount importance to review and assess these new developments in comparison with recent research achievements in the well-established areas of parallel and distributed computing, from industry and the scientific community. On the other hand, recent directions in research and technological studies have shown that further research is required to gain maturity in this area.

In this regard, the core research areas that need immediate attention of the scientific community include computing infrastructures, models to support new emerging architectures, programming models and tools to simulate and evaluate new architectures, and programming languages that are appropriate for new and emerging computation- and data-intensive applications in the industrial information systems. Several challenges have to be addressed in order to create large scale parallel and distributed information processing systems that meet current application requirements. Most of them are related to system architectures, algorithms, big data processing, network communication and programming models. These issues need to be addressed under joint efforts from different areas, such as networking and systems, software and architecture, embedded systems, multi-processors on-chip, among others.

Topics of interest for this special issue include, but are not limited to:

• Parallel computing
• Distributed and network-based computing
• Systems and architectures
• Advanced Algorithms and Applications
• AI and deep learning computing
• Software architectures and modelling languages
• Cybersecurity in distributed and network-based computing and control systems
• Time predictability of network communication
• Time-sensitive networking
• Software defined networking and network virtualization
• Tactile industrial internet (i.e., low latency)
• Functional safety and dependable systems
• Hardware in the loop and formal verification methodologies
• Models, tools and industrial case studies

The papers in this special issue will constitute a representative sample of the latest developments in these areas and will cover some of the above-mentioned topics. This special issue will solicit two types of papers: (1) regular papers from an open call, (2) extended versions of best selected papers from the 28th Euromicro Conference on Parallel, Distributed, and Network-Based Processing. The extended versions will require at least 40% new material and technical contributions. Note that the standard peer-review process of JSA will be followed in both cases.

Submissions should be made online at https://www.editorialmanager.com/jsa/. Please select the “VSI:PDP20” option as the type of the paper during the submission process.

JSA has adopted the Virtual Special Issue model to speed up the publication process, where Special Issue papers are published in regular issues, but marked as SI papers. Acceptance decisions are made on a rolling basis. Therefore, authors are encouraged to submit papers early, and need not wait until the submission deadline.
