Hybrid artificial intelligence (H-AI), has emerged. H-AI is dedicated to investigating models, methods, technologies, and systems that enable and support the synergy, symbiosis, and augmentation of human and artificial intelligence. This provides a promising approach to the technical and ethical challenges–humans and machines can each focus on what they are good at, meanwhile humans are still largely in control in decision making.
An embedded system (unlike a stand-alone computer) is a cyber system being an inseparable part of a certain larger system (e.g. product or infrastructure). It serves a specific aim (e.g. monitoring, control etc.) in this larger system through (repeatedly) executing specific computation and communication processes required by its application. It is application-specific. It has to be especially designed or adopted to adequately serve the execution of these specific computation processes, and satisfy the application’s requirements related to such attributes as functional behaviour, reaction speed or throughput, energy consumption, geometrical dimensions, price, reliability, safety, security, etc. Typically, embedded systems are (reactive) real-time systems, include sensing, interfacing, processing and/or actuating sub-systems, and involve in their implementation various mixtures of digital and analogue hardware, and embedded software.
Smart industry system is a combination of humans, embedded systems, advanced computation, communication and control with the aim to achieve specific goals at an optimized level. This special section will provide a platform for scientists, engineers and industrial practitioners to present their latest theoretical and technological advancements in smart industry.

Short Bio of Guest Editors:
Hoshang Kolivand received his MS degree in applied mathematics and computer from Amirkabir University of Technology, Iran, in 1999, and his PhD from Media and Games Innovation Centre of Excellence (MaGIC-X) in Universiti Teknologi Malaysia in 2013. He has completed his Post Doctoral in Augmented Reality in UTM. Previously he worked as a lecturer in Shahid Beheshti University, Iran and then as a Senior Lecturer in Universiti Teknologi Malaysia. Currently he is a Senior Lecturer in Liverpool John Moores University. He has published numerous articles in international journals, conference proceedings and technical papers, including chapters in books. He is an active reviewer of many conferences and international journals. He has also published many books in object-oriented programming and mathematics. His research interests include Computer Graphics, Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality.

Prof. Nadia Nedjah graduated in 1987 in Systems Engineering and Computation and in 1990 obtained an M.Sc. degree also in Systems Engineering and Computation. Both degree were obtained form University of Annaba, Algeria. Since 1997 she holds a Ph.D. degree from University of Manchester – Institute of Science and Technology, UK. She joined the Department of Electronics Engineering and Telecommunications of the Engineering Faculty of the State University of Rio de Janeiro as an Associate Professor. Between 2009 and 2013, she was the head of the Intelligent System research area in the Electronics Engineering Post-graduate programme of the State University of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. She is the founder and the Editor-in-Chief of the International Journals of High Performance System Architecture and of Innovative Computing Applications, both published by Inderscience, UK. She published three authored books about Functional and Re-writing Languages, Hardware/Software Co-design for Systems Acceleration and Hardware for soft Computing vs. Soft Computing for Hardware. She (co)-guest edited more than 25 special issues for high impact journal sand more than 45 organised books on computational intelligence related topics, such as Evolvable Machines, Genetic Systems Programming, Evolutionary Machine Design: Methodologies and Applications and Real-World Multi-Objective System Engineering. She (co)-authored more than 150 journal papers and more than 250 conference papers. She is Associate Editor of more than 10 international journals, such as the Francis & Taylor’s International Journal of Electronics, Elsevier’s Integration, The VLSI Journal and Microprocessors and Microsystems and IET’s Computer & Digital Techniques. She organised several major conferences related to computational intelligence, such as the 7th edition of Intelligent Systems Design and Application and the 5th edition of Hybrid Intelligent Systems. She also was one of the founder of the International Conference on Adaptive and Intelligent Systems.
Yu Kong is an assistant professor of the Thomas Golisano College of Computing and Information Sciences, Rochester Institute of Technology since 2018. He is now directing the ACTION Lab.Prior to that, he was a postdoc in rof.Yun (Raymond) Fu’s synergetic media learning lab at Northeastern University, Boston, USA.
Dr. Kong’s research interests are Computer Vision, Machine Learning, Data Mining, Social Media Analytics, and Smart Environment. More Specifically, he works on video understanding algorithms for action recognition, visual forecasting, image super-resolution, object detection and tracking, and machine learning algorithms for robust decision making including meta-learning, active learning, multi-modal learning, and transfer learning.
Dr. Kong’s work has been mainly funded by the Office of Naval Research (ONR), and industry gifts(Nvidia GPU program).

Dr Hurst is an Assistant Professor in Data Science in the Information Technology Group. He has over 70 international publications in the areas of data science, creative technologies, critical infrastructure protection, simulation and 3D graphics.
He has held several grants as Principal Investigator; some of which include EPSRC-funded ‘Data Analytics for Health-Care Profiling using Smart Meters’ (EP/R020922/1), InnovateUK-funded Productivity Accelerator (https://gtr.ukri.org/projects?ref=971582), ICURe/InnovateUK-funded ‘Personalised Health Care Monitoring usingSmart Meter Energy Readings’ and Made Smarter-funded ‘Digital Twin for Space Planning’.
Prior to working at WUR, he was an award-winning Reader (Associate Professor) in Creative Technologies in the Department of Computer Science at Liverpool John Moores University, where he worked for 6 years. During this time he taught a variety of subjects including Data Visualisation, Digital Games Content Production, Internet and Web Technologies, Research Skills, Interactive Multimedia Systems, Advanced Multimedia, Digital Storytelling and Interactive media and games development.
His education includes a PGCert (Distinction) in Higher Education, a PhD in Computer Science (scholarship – focusing on Critical Infrastructures), an MSc with Distinction in Web Computing and a BSc(Hons) in Product Design.
