The purpose of this special section is to address the challenges of Augmentative Communication (AC) with the advanced principles of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) methodologies. Current research on AC focuses on individuals with functional communication disabilities using advanced communication devices. This special section makes an attempt to incorporate progress in HCI models for AC to enhance day-to-day communication abilities of the people with hearing disabilities, which requires various levels of clinical observations and technical advancements against this background. The process of converging HCI with AC empowers the communicative intent and speaking ability of individuals with hearing impairments. It offers an alternative and efficient way for individuals to communicate based on their thoughts using HCI-assisted advanced communication devices.
This is made possible with computer-generated outputs drawn from an individual sign language, gestures, pictures, text, messages, and facial expressions. However, one of the key drawbacks of existing AC devices is that they do not cope well with adults having a lack of non-verbal communication skills. The HCI-enabled AC communication paradigm provides an ideal solution to the concerns mentioned above by offering more innovative ways to share human thoughts and feelings. The key objective of this call-for-paper is to explore qualitative solutions for users with both autism and non-verbal communication-related disorders using HCI techniques. Despite the modern advances in the field of AC and HCI, they are still at an initial stage of development and require greater enhancements. Once HCI-assisted specific design and development strategies for AC is introduced, it would create remarkable progress in assisting people with speaking disabilities, and result in greater significance to society.
In this context, this special section offers a platform for researchers and practitioners worldwide to present their novel and innovative ideas on HCI for AC. We invite unpublished articles presenting interactive system models, conceptual designs, and technological advancements related to the theme of this special section. Articles that represent systematic solutions from a real-world perspective are most welcome.

New papers, or extended versions of papers presented at related conferences, are welcome. Submissions must not be currently under review for publication elsewhere. Conference papers may be submitted only if they are substantially extended (more than 50%), and must be referenced. All submitted papers will be peer-reviewed using the normal standards of CAEE, and accepted based on quality, originality, novelty, and relevance to the theme of the special section. By submitting a paper to this issue, the authors agree to referee one paper (if asked) within the time frame of the special issue.
