Call: Heterogeneous and parallel computing are nowadays pervading the market, disrupting once again the electronics and computer science landscape and raising new challenges to designers and developers. Heterogeneity makes it possible to choose where to map applications among different processing and communication resources, and in some cases it even allows to shape new resources according to the context needs. Parallelism, instead, enables the concurrent execution of operations composing applications. The expression of application parallelism is, in itself, challenging, as it may be achieved either through legacy code automated analysis, or through additional engineering effort. This special issue accepts articles proposing models, methodologies and architectures targeting heterogeneous and parallel computing for cyber physical systems.Cyber physical systems are the new generation of embedded systems, with an enhanced connectivity and adaptivity to changing functional and non functional requirements coming from the environment, the user and the system itself. In order to master connectivity and adaptivity, also considering the specific context constraints, cyber physical systems may extremely benefit from heterogeneity and parallelism. To do so, model-based design and operation, methodologies aiding the development and optimization, and new architectures and platforms are within the scope of this issue.
