Today’s software industry is more global and distributed than it has been ever before. The idea of developing major software products or IT services in one location or by one team belongs to the past. While Global Software Engineering (GSE) has become part of everyday life by now, succeeding in the global software industry remains challenging, with a considerable share of global projects still not meeting the expectations, especially regarding cost savings and time to market. Over the past decade, research on GSE has uncovered many challenges associated with operating over physical, temporal, and cultural distances. Albeit known, these distances are still causing severe breakdowns in communication and collaboration among distributed teams. As such, there is a considerable gap to fill in and establish how to manage such challenges effectively.
In this special issue, we invite high-quality contributions, both from academia and industry, focusing on the solutions to the challenges and needs of GSE. We encourage, but the call is not limited to, submissions of extended full research papers accepted at the 14th edition of the International Conference on Global Software Engineering (ICGSE’19).
OBJECTIVES AND TOPICS
This special issue aims to publish new contributions to the field of GSE research. In particular, we seek high-quality empirical studies and practical experience reports on the effects of collaboration techniques, productivity evaluations of distributed teams from empirical field studies, and industry case studies providing solutions to the GSE challenges. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:
Communication, coordination, and collaboration in distributed software teams
Technological support to solve GSE challenges
Social, cultural, and human aspects in GSE
Distributed team building
Methods and processes in distributed settings including agile, lean, and hybrid
Scaling distributed development
Best practices, strategies, and tools for agile product management
Best practices, platforms, and tools from industrial offshoring, outsourcing, and crowdsourcing experiences

All manuscripts and any supplementary material should be submitted through the Elsevier Editorial System at http://ees.elsevier.com/jss. Follow the submission instructions given on this site. Please, select the article type as “Global Software Egnr”. All submitted papers should adhere to the general principles of the Journal of Systems and Software articles. Submissions have to be prepared according to the Guide for Authors, available on the journal website.
Submitted papers must be original, must not have been previously published or be under consideration for publication elsewhere. In case a paper has been already presented at a conference, it should be extended by at least 30% new technical contributions, before being submitted for this special issue. Please, note that the papers from ICGSE 2019 that are also invited for this special issue, are subject to the same rule. Authors are requested to attach the previously published article and a cover letter explaining the changes made in the journal version. The difference in contributions between the two versions should also be stated in the submitted article.
For the sake of transparency and reproducibility, we strongly encourage authors to share their analysis scripts, on freely accessible code repositories (e.g., GitHub, Bitbucket), as well as the empirical datasets on Dataverse (https://dataverse.org), following Google guidelines to dataset providers (https://developers.google.com/search/docs/data-types/dataset).
Submissions will be reviewed by at least three experts in the field. The primary evaluation criteria are high-quality submissions, innovative aspects in the domain of global software engineering, the practical impact of the proposed study, and thorough evaluation. The final decision will be made by the guest editors, in consultation with the journal’s Editors-in-Chief and the Special Issues Editor.
