Interest to CHB readers/contributors

As shown on the website of CHB, the majority of most downloaded/cited articles of CHB are social media-related articles. In addition, the recent innovations and business opportunities arising from the Internet platform will definitely attract tremendous positive attention from academia and practitioners. In fact, many recent well-known successful entrepreneurial/educational/learning activities around the world mainly rely on the online platform and mobile applications. CHB has published a number of articles on this related topics but in a sporadic way. This special issue echoes the growing research trend towards innovations and entrepreneurship which take full advantage of the digital era. It can be reasonably expected that many readers/contributors of CHB will show great interest in this topic.

Given the above, the guest editors believe that receiving a number of high-quality manuscripts is not an issue. We are inclined not to pre-invite 6-8 manuscripts into this special issue. Instead, we propose to open all slots of this special issue to the public academic community as in other international journals so that we can select only the high-quality manuscripts after going through the same rigorous review process. However, once this special issue has been confirmed by CHB, we plan to invite 1-2 leading researchers in this field to submit their work or share their thoughts to attract strong citations and downloads. In addition to the regular CFP announcement channel through CHB website, once confirmed, a comprehensive potential author list will be compiled through SciVal database which is also accessible to guest editors. Also, the CFP announcement will be circulated and posted in social media, professional associations and regional conferences.

The lead guest editor will serve as the corresponding guest editor as well. As a guest (co)editor for other three special issues, the lead guest editor has access to the reviewer database of Elsevier and Emerald. In this role he will serve as a meta-reviewer of all reviewed submissions and will suggest the further disposal to the Commissioning Editor of the journal, prof. Paul A. Kirschner, who makes the ultimate decision on all submissions. The reviewers for submitted manuscripts will be mainly selected from these reviewer databases and his reviewer pool based on the manuscript’s topics and reviewers’ specialties.

World Economic Forum claims that we are at the beginning of a Fourth Industrial Revolution (i.e., a new era that builds and extends the impact of digitization in new and unanticipated ways). This wave of digitalization creates numerous opportunities for innovative entrepreneurs. Many new ventures grasp the opportunity introducing disruptive business models to the market. Using an online platform that connects multiple sides of players in a market is one of the most significant one. Examples include Uber in transportation, Airbnb in lodging, Lending Club in consumer credit loan and Kickstarter in new venture investments. Many research issues arise from the emergence of such novel business model.

The goal of this special issue is to bring together different facets of issues surrounding innovation and entrepreneurship in the era of digitization. The relevant issues not only include innovation on products and services but also on process and strategy. Platform strategy and business model innovation are the significant concerns. However, issues are not constrained in the discipline of business and information management. Research on government policies (e.g., taxes or regulations) as well as social and legal concerns arising from new business models due to emerging information technology is also welcome. It is also notable that digital innovation has blurred the national boundary and exerts influences globally.

This special issue welcomes contributions on the following, though not fully inclusive, list of topics:

  • How do established companies respond to the opportunities and threats arising from the emerging technology in the digital era?

  • How do new ventures adopting new business models (e.g., multi-sided platforms) compete with each other and what are the key successful factors?

  • How does platform economy change business competitive landscape?

  • How do platform players overcome the initial chick-and-egg problem?

  • How do new businesses in digital era influence regional and national economic development? And, how does a government respond to them via fiscal policy or trade policy?

  • How do entrepreneurial and innovative activities in digital era challenge government policy of regulation or deregulation?

  • How do social media embody entrepreneurial opportunities in the digital era and transform people’ social life?

  • How can successful innovations/entrepreneurship lessons be taught, learned or implemented in the digital era?
