Nowadays, 3D data has attracted more and more attentions from both academic and industry communities, since it can offer users a more interactive, realistic and immersive experience through various multimedia services and applications, such as augmented reality, virtual reality, 3DTV, to name a few. The 3D data, such as point clouds, dynamic meshes, motion capture data, multi-view/stereo video, and light-field images/videos, can be explored to effectively represent the objects and scene in the world. Since the 3D data are quite different from the natural visual data with unique characteristics, this brings new challenges for developing new processing and evaluation technologies for 3D data. Consequently, in the new era of 3D data, this induces a plethora of open questions on the use of 3D data to develop novel visual system modeling, evaluation, and optimization.
This special issue aims to identify new challenges and present the latest research achievements on emerging 3D and immersive data processing and evaluation technologies, including 3D data acquisition, representation, compression, transmission, display and quality assessment. The topics of interests include, but are not limited to:
Subjective and objective evaluations for 3D data
3D data processing and compression
Efficient hardware implementation for 3D data multimedia systems
Information forensics and security for 3D data
Novel optimization theory and modeling for 3D data
New services and applications based on 3D data
Survey on the emerging 3D data processing and evaluation technologies
Prospective authors are invited to submit the high quality research papers that have not been submitted, accepted or published. The manuscript should be prepared according to the author guideline and submitted through the online system. All submitted manuscripts will be reviewed and evaluated based on the relevance, originality, novelty, and presentation.
