Summary of issue:
Textiles are some of the earliest human-produced artifacts, with the oldest known examples dating back more than 30,000 years. The history of textiles has been one of constant innovation in materials, manufacturing, and design. Today, the textiles industry accounts for about 4% of the world’s GDP, and textiles technologies and materials are used in almost every area of human endeavour, including — to name a few — medical implants, haute couture, lightweight rocket fuel tanks, firefighting equipment, and architecture. These applications are enabled by the complexity and flexibility of textiles as engineering materials. Their highly non-linear and stochastic mechanical and shaping behaviours make textiles a versatile and capability-rich option for many advanced material applications, allowing them to provide remarkably varied shapes and non-uniform and/or directional characteristics.
While textiles show great promise for a wide range of engineering functions, their use has been limited by a lack of powerful and robust modeling and design tools that would enable virtual simulation and analysis in support of design exploration and optimization. In the past several years there has been increasing research activity, across multiple disciplines, in the areas of computational modelling, design and fabrication, with a segment of that activity focused on textiles. In order to bring together the researchers from these diverse fields this special issue will offer a common forum for sharing state-of-the-art research on computational modeling, design and fabrication for textiles, with the scope of the issue covering all types of textiles and fabrics, including braids, felts, wovens, and knits.
Researchers and experts from academia and industry are invited to share their original work by submitting research, review, and application papers. The objective of the issue is to promote the contributions of this emerging technical area, to distribute recent insights and findings, and to stimulate further research in this fertile multi-disciplinary research domain. Examples of textile-related topics include, but are not limited to:
Modeling and simulation of textile mechanics
Shape modeling of textile structures
Interactive, inverse and optimized design methods
Computational exploration of design spaces
Automated fabrication of textiles
Manufacturability and performance analysis
Textile devices and sensors
Innovative textile applications
Survey of the state-of-the-art in CAD/modeling tools

All prospective authors are encouraged to obtain early feedback on suitability of submission topics by emailing an abstract to the Guest Editors. All papers will be rigorously refereed by peer reviewers of the journal. Submission of a manuscript to this issue of CAD implies that no similar paper is already accepted, or will be submitted to any other conference or journal. Papers of an appropriate standard not included in the special issue may be considered for publication in a regular issue of Computer-Aided Design.
