Aim and Scope:
Cognition is emerging as a new and promising methodology with the development of cognitive-inspired computing, cognitive-inspired interaction and systems, which has the potential to enable a large class of applications and has emerged with a great potential to change our life. However, recent advances on artificial intelligence (AI), fog computing, big data, and cognitive computational theory show that multidisciplinary cognitive-inspired computing still struggle with fundamental, long-standing problems, such as computational models and decision-making mechanisms based on the neurobiological processes of the brain, cognitive sciences, and psychology. How to enhance human cognitive performance with machine learning, common sense, natural language processing etc. are worth exploring.

The objective of this special issue is to bring together state-of-the-art research contributions that address these key aspects of cognitive-inspired computing and applications. Original papers describing completed and unpublished work not currently under review by any other journal/magazine/conference are solicited. Specific topics include, but not limited to, the following:

Prospective authors should submit original manuscripts that have not appeared, nor are under consideration, in any other journal. Prospective authors are required to follow the Author’s Guide for manuscript submission to Information Processing & Management. To ensure that all manuscripts are correctly identified for inclusion in the special issue, it is important that authors select “VSI: CIPA” when they reach the “Article Type Selection / Issue selection” step in the submission process. Referees will consider originality, significance, technical soundness, clarity of exposition, and relevance to the special issue topics above.

Bio of GE
Zheng Xu was born in Shanghai, China. He received the Ph.D. degrees from the School of Computing Engineering and Science, Shanghai University, Shanghai, in 2012. He is currently the associate professor in Shanghai University of Medicine and Health Sciences, China. His current research interests include big data, CPS, and public security with over 2200 citations (H-index 23). He has authored or co-authored more than 90 publications including IEEE Trans. On Fuzzy Systems, IEEE Trans. On Automation Science and Engineering, IEEE Trans. On Emerging Topics in Computing, IEEE Trans. on Systems, Man, and Cybernetics: Systems, IEEE Trans. On Cloud Computing, IEEE Trans. on Big Data etc. He is also the associate editor of IEEE Access journal, Springer ECR journal, Springer DIoT journal, and TSI AutoSoft journal. The paper titled “Ensemble-based multi-filter feature selection method for DDoS detection in cloud computing” obtained EURASIP Best paper awards 2019.
Neil Y. Yen received his doctorates in human sciences at Waseda University, Japan, and in engineering at Tamkang University, Taiwan, in 2012. His doctorate in Waseda University was funded by the JSPS (Japan Society for the Promotion of Science) under RONPAKU program. He has served as Associate Professor at the University of Aizu, Fukushima, Japan, since April 2012. He has been engaged in the interdisciplinary research domains including computer science and engineering, information management, and human informatics. His research interests are primarily in computational intelligence and its applications. Both theoretical and practical issues are concerned including (1) hybrid intelligence for information retrieval, management, and optimization; (2) awareness systems for human-centered support; and (3) social network analysis. Yen has been actively involved in the research community by serving as Guest Coeditor of the WWW Journal, International Journal of Computational Intelligence, Journal of Supercomputing and Cluster Computing: the Journal of Networks, Software Tools and Applications, as Associate Editor of Human-Centric Computing and Information Sciences, International Journal of Systems and Service-Oriented Engineering, and several journals related to his research area, as reviewer for technical journals/transactions, and as Organizer/Chair of IEEE/ACM international conferences and workshops. His recent publications can be found on refereed international journals/conferences, including 3 on ACM Transactions on Intelligent Systems and Technology, IEEE Transactions on Learning Technologies, and the WWW Journal. He is now a member of IEEE Computer Society, IEEE System, Man, and Cybernetics Society, and technical committee of awareness computing (IEEE SMC).
Vijayan Sugumaran is a Professor of Management Information Systems in the department of Decision and Information Sciences at Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan, as well as a WCU Professor of Service Systems Management and Engineering at Sogang University in South Korea. He received his PhD in Information Technology from George Mason University, located in Fairfax, VA, and his research interests are in the areas of service science, ontologies and Semantic Web, intelligent agent and multi-agent systems, component based software development, and knowledge-based systems. His most recent publications have appeared in Information systems Research, ACM Transactions on Database Systems, IEEE Transactions on Education, IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management, Communications of the ACM, Healthcare Management Science, and Data and Knowledge Engineering. He has published over 150 peer-reviewed articles in journals, conferences, and books. He has edited ten books and two journal special issues, and he is the editor-in-chief of the International Journal of Intelligent Information Technologies and also serves on the editorial board of seven other journals. He was the program co-chair for the 13th International Conference on Applications of Natural Language to Information Systems (NLDB 2008). In addition, he has served as the chair of the Intelligent Agent and Multi-Agent Systems mini-track for Americas Conference on Information Systems (AMCIS 1999 – 2012) and Intelligent Information Systems track for the Information Resources Management Association International Conference (IRMA 2001, 2002, 2005 – 2007). He served as Chair of the E-Commerce track for Decision Science Institute’s Annual Conference, 2004. He was the Information Technology Coordinator for the Decision Sciences Institute (2007-2009). He also regularly serves as a program committee member for numerous national and international conferences.
