Special Issue Call for Papers:

This is a Call for Papers for a Special Issue on “Big Data Technologies and Applications” of the international, application oriented research journal “Computers in Industry”. Our journal aims to publish original, high-quality, application-oriented research papers that:

  • show new trends in and options for the use of Information and Communication Technology in industry;
  • link or integrate different technology fields in the broad area of computer applications for industry;
  • link or integrate different application areas of ICT in industry.

Aims and Scope

Big data represents the collection of data sets characterized by high volume, velocity and variety. These inherent features make it difficult to use traditional data processing techniques for value extraction. There are numerous challenges in designing new data processing systems for managing, analysing and extracting useful knowledge from massive data. As a novel source for more confident decision-making in most sectors of our society, it can provide great opportunities. Therefore, research in big data is receiving growing attention from researchers and practitioners in academia, industry, and the governments.

The main components and ecosystem of big data covers a wide category of technologies, including the collection, storage, analytics and visualization of immense quantities of data. The development and application of big data technologies have far-reaching implications for better predictive analytics and knowledge discoveries in diverse industrial fields, such as manufacturing, health, transportation, logistics and so on, which have become an important enabler for innovation, reconstruction, and advancement in multiple industrial areas.

The aim of this special issue is to invite high quality manuscripts that report on novel science and engineering solutions regarding the theoretical foundations, manipulation systems, big data analytics and data-driven decision making in industrial applications.

We welcome original and unpublished manuscripts from academia and industry on the recent advances in different aspects of big data research and applications. We expect the proposed solutions to be innovative with a particular focus on new and exciting developments fitting within the aims and scope of the journal.


This special issue calls for original papers describing the theories, methodologies, and solutions for the exploration and practice of big data technologies. Topics of interests include, but are not limited to:

  • Theoretical foundations for semantic fusion, analytics and visualization of big data with applications in industry.
  • Novel computing paradigms and infrastructure for big data collection, storage, management, and analytics, with applications in industry.
  • Quality controls of big data, e.g., accuracy, completeness, and timeliness, data with applications in industry. 
  • Big data processing and computing methods for social network, natural language processing, multimedia, etc. data with applications in industry.
  • Big data intelligence and scientific discovery from big data in industry.
  • Security, privacy and trustworthiness of big data in industry.
  • Toolbox, applications and systems for big data in industry.
  • Standardization efforts for big data infrastructure and application in industry.
  • Best practices and applications of big data technologies in diverse industrial areas, e.g., manufacturing, logistics, transportation, and services industries with a substantial flow of physical products such as healthcare, etc.

Submission and Review:

Only submissions that are within the scope of the Special Issue and which indicate a clear contribution to the field will be accepted. The full papers will be subjected to a blind review, possibly in two rounds depending on the reviewers’ comments.
