The Internet made the connectivity between people across the globe possible at an unprecedented scale and pace. The next wave of connectivity is coming much faster to interconnect objects and create a smart cyber-physical environment. Now, we see a shift of technology driven focus to human accessibility using digital twinning. Internet-of-People (IoP) represents the mapping of social individuals that refer to people as cyber entities. Apart from traditional focus such as on data collection, modeling, and ubiquitous intelligence for a wide range of applications of crowd sourced, Internet-based personal information, it is essential to include citizen services in the smart community. Along with wearable, AI based gestural interface, automatic speech recognition pay way for hyper-connected cypher physical systems (CPS) when we have data from whole community. With these, the emerging social computing and brain science will allow further incorporation of the social and mental worlds into the so-called Hyper World. Due to the pervasiveness of IoP and its impacts on human activity, it has quickly emerged as a hot and important interdisciplinary field. It represents the mapping of social individuals and their interactions with smart devices to the internet.
In essence, Internet-of-People promotes the idea that a smart society is only possible if there is a better, smarter, and secure collaboration bridging machine intelligence and human intelligence, between devices and people, where technology artificial intelligence is applied from a human-centric standpoint.
This Special Issue will act as a premier forum for sharing theoretical, experimental and operational results in the relevant fields and it focuses on cutting-edge research from academia, industry and practitioners, with emphasis on original, novel, innovative and impact-oriented research providing insights into smarter hyper-connected societies’ needs, processes, services and frameworks using the Internet-of-People paradigm.
This Special Issue aims at promoting original and unpublished research works Artificial intelligence and Internet-of-People for hyper connected cypher physical systems. Dr. Sadia Din received her Ph.D. and Master degree in School of Computer Science from Kyungpook National University, South Korea. Her areas of research are 5G networks and IoT-enabled green communication, big data analytics, and wireless sensor networks. She has published in some highly reputed Journals and conference such as Computer Networks, IEEE Access, IEEE LCN, IEEE INFOCOM, IEEE GLOBECOM, ACM SAC, and IEEE ICC at the beginning of her research career. At IEEE LCN 2017 in Singapore, she chaired a couple of sessions.
Dr. Juan V. Capella received the Eng. degree in Computer Science from the Technical University of Valencia (UPV), Spain, in 1998. He joined the Distributed Systems Research Group at UPV, where he received the MS degree in Computer Engineering in 2000 and Ph.D. Degree in 2010. He has been an Assistant Professor of the Department of Systems Data Processing and Computer Engineering (DISCA), UPV, since 2001, and Associate Professor since 2010, where he teaches computer networks and ubiquitous computing. In 2007 he developed and taught a new postgraduate course in wireless sensor networks at the University of Valencia. He is visiting professor at the prestigious French engineering school “ESIGELEC”, where he teaches new trends in computer networks in an international master. His main research interests are ad-hoc and wireless sensor networks and distributed systems. He has published 4 books and more than 30 papers in international journals and conferences about his research projects, obtaining several awards. He is member of the editorial committee of the International Journal On Advances in Networks and Services and the IEEE RITA Journal, and he has been reviewer, organizer, and member of the program committee of several international conferences organized by IEEE and ACM.
Dr. Khondker Shajadul Hasan is currently working as an assistant professor of Computer Science at the University of Houston – Clear Lake (UHCL), Houston, TX. Before joining UHCL, Dr. Khondker has worked at Schlumberger Technology, Houston, as a Senior Software Engineer from 2014 -2016. He was associated with future of rigs project with Planck core research and development group and received several cutting-edge trainings and certificates. Dr. Khondker was responsible of integrating direction drilling and environment correction of gamma-ray models in the future of rig project. Dr. Khondker received his Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Oklahoma, USA in 2014. His Ph.D. research directions were parallel and distributed computing, multi-core performance prediction models, and general-purpose computing using graphical processing unit (GPGPU). He received his MS in Computer Science from Wichita State University, Kansas, USA, in 2001 and BS in Computer Science from North South University, Dhaka, Bangladesh, in 1998. He has worked as a Lecturer and Senior Lecturer from 2002 to 2009 in the Computer Science Department at North South University.
Dr. Khondker has worked as a Research Assistant at MSCI Inc., Oklahoma, on site. He was associated with the multi-core CPU performance prediction modeling in distributed environment group. He was in-charge of introducing mathematical models, associated parallel algorithms, and simulators for the research project. The work was highly appreciated by the research community and resulted in several high-ranked journal and conference publications. Dr. Khondker has also worked in the Samson high-performance research lab in the University of Oklahoma where he utilized his proposed performance prediction models to introduce task dispatchers in distributed multi-core environment. Both task dispatchers were compared against widely used commercial system with real-world heterogeneous benchmark workload (SPEC 2006). Empirical results showed the accuracy of introduced task models which outperformed the commercial task dispatcher.
Dr. Khondker is the recipient of distinguished alumni award 2017 based on his academic achievement and service towards the community from North South University. Recently he received two internal research grants from the UHCL. Dr. Khondker is the recipient of Robberson Research and Travel Grants in 2014 and the recipient of the Computer Science Advisory Board Scholarship 2012–2013. His research interest includes parallel and distributed systems, performance modelling algorithms, and real-time scheduling. Based on his research interest and expertise, several undergraduate and master’s students are working with him on their final thesis/project. Dr. Khondker has published several Journal and conference papers in highly reputed peer-reviewed conferences and Journals. Besides, Dr. Khondker is working as a reviewer for multiple journals and conferences. He is also the member of Schlumberger Eureka Technical Community (SETC) and International Association of Engineers (IAENG).
Prof. Muhammad Shafique is a full professor (Univ.-Prof.) of Computer Architecture and Robust Energy-Efficient Technologies (CARE-Tech.) at the Embedded Computing Systems Group, Institute of Computer Engineering, Faculty of Informatics, Vienna University of Technology (TU Wien) since Nov. 2016. He received his Ph.D. in Computer Science from Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), Germany in Jan.2011. Afterwards, he established and led a highly recognized research group for several years as well as conducted impactful research and development activities in Pakistan. Besides co-founding a technology startup in Pakistan, he was also an initiator and team lead of an ICT R&D project. He has also established strong research ties with multiple universities in Pakistan, where he is actively co-supervising various R&D activities, resulting in top-quality research outcome and scientific publications. Before, he was with Streaming Networks Pvt. Ltd. where he was involved in research and development of video coding systems several years.
Dr. Shafique has demonstrated success in leading team-projects, meeting deadlines for demonstrations, motivating team members to peak performance levels, and completion of independent challenging tasks. His experience is corroborated by strong technical knowledge and an educational record (throughout Gold Medalist). He also possesses an in-depth understanding of various video coding standards (HEVC, H.264, MVC, MPEG-1/2/4).
His research interests are in emerging Brain-Inspired Computing trends like Neuromorphic and Approximate Computing, Hardware and System-level Design for Machine Learning and AI, computer architecture, power- & energy-efficient systems, robust computing, dependable & fault-tolerant system design, hardware security, emerging technologies & nanosystems, FPGAs, MPSoCs, and embedded systems. His research has a special focus on cross-layer analysis, modeling, design, and optimization of computing and memory systems covering various layers of the hardware and software stacks. The researched technologies and tools are deployed in application use cases from Internet-of-Things (IoT), smart Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS), and ICT for Development (ICT4D) domains.
Dr. Shafique has given several Invited Talks, Tutorials, and Keynotes. He has also organized many special sessions at premier venues (like DAC, ICCAD, DATE, and ESWeek) and served as the Guest Editor for IEEE Design and Test Magazine (D&T) and IEEE Transactions on Sustainable Computing (T-SUSC). He is the TPC Chair of ISVLSI 2020. He has served as the TPC co-Chair of ESTIMedia and LPDC, General Chair of ESTIMedia, and Track Chair at DATE and FDL. He has served on the program committees of numerous prestigious IEEE/ACM conferences including ICCAD, ISCA, DATE, CASES, ASPDAC, and FPL. He is a senior member of the IEEE and IEEE Signal Processing Society (SPS), and a member of the ACM, SIGARCH, SIGDA, SIGBED, and HIPEAC. He holds one US patent and has (co-)authored 4 Books, 4 Book Chapters, and over 200 papers in premier journals and conferences.
Dr. Shafique received the prestigious 2015 ACM/SIGDA Outstanding New Faculty Award (typically, given world-wide to one person per year) for demonstrating an outstanding potential as a lead researcher and/or educator in the field of electronic design automation. Dr. Shafique also received six gold medals in his educational career, and several best paper awards and nominations at prestigious conferences like CODES+ISSS, DATE, DAC and ICCAD, Best Master Thesis Award, DAC’14 Designer Track Best Poster Award, IEEE Transactions of Computer “Feature Paper of the Month” Awards, and Best Lecturer Award.
