Facts About University of Cordoba

Based in Spain, the University of Córdoba (UCO) is a public university known for its programs on natural sciences and veterinary science, research activity, and historic location. These programs have been recognized by international university organizations. Meanwhile, its campuses are located in Córdoba, the city with the most UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the world.

UCO is organized into 10 faculties and schools, centered on subjects like agriculture, medicine, veterinary science, philosophy, law, business, and natural sciences. It offers 34 undergraduate, 46 graduate, and 11 doctoral programs, some of which are taught in English. Among these, the most highly regarded ones include natural sciences, agricultural sciences, food science, veterinary science, and energy science and engineering. In addition, the university offers Spanish language and culture courses for international students.

Research at UCO is conducted in its over 10 centers, which cover fields like medicine, criminology, animal health, botany, aerobiology, and chemistry. It works with 211 research groups and has amassed over 180 national and 25 international projects.

UCO’s four campuses are located in Rabanales, Menendez Pidal, Belmez, and at the city center, respectively. Students can catch film festivals at the school’s movie theater and attend performance art events at the theater. Aspiring writers can also contribute to a wide variety of books and magazines published by the university. Established in 1972, UCO traces its roots in the Free University of Córdoba, which operated until 1878. Nearly a century after the latter’s closing, UCO assumed its position as the foremost university in the city as it expanded on the Free University’s course offerings and facilities while maintaining some of its core competencies like the veterinary science program.

As of 2020, UCO opens its doors to more than 14,500 undergraduates, 3,300 postgraduates, 1,800 teaching staff, and 760 research and office support employees. Its work on agricultural science and food science has led it to become a member of the Agrifood Campus of International Excellence, which features five renowned universities in Spain’s southern region. The school has also forged academic partnerships with universities from five continents.

UCO’s notable alumni include Carmen Calvo (politician), Guillermo Fernandez Vara (politician), Manuel Pimentel (politician), Manuel Moyano (writer), Pedro Jordano (ecologist), and Desiderio Vaquerizo Gil (archeologist).
