Located in the capital city of Taipei, NTU is recognized as the top university in the country and among the high ranking universities in Asia. The university’s motto is Integrity, Diligence, Fidelity, Compassion.

NTU offers a diverse selection of programs that cover bachelor’s, master’s, and doctorate degrees. There are 11 colleges where students can pursue almost 8,000 courses taught each semester. Colleges include Social Sciences, Science, Law, Liberal Arts, Bio-Resources & Agriculture, Public Health, Life Science, Engineering, Management, Electrical Engineering & Computer Science, and Medicine.

Other academic units include 56 departments and 112 institutes for graduate studies. There are 18 degree programs that graduate and postgraduate students can choose from at NTU.

In general, students can choose any individual courses offered under NTU’s academic units subject to the prerequisites for those subjects. For undergraduate studies, the university has a core curriculum composed of subjects such as English, Chinese, public service, and physical education. Admission into an undergraduate program can be influenced by the level of selectiveness of the college. For example, finance, medicine, law, and engineering are some of the most competitive colleges.

Originally named Taihoku Imperial University, NTU was established during the Japanese occupation of the island. Following the end of World War II, the university adopted its current name on November 15, 1945, and the Nationalist government took over the operations and administration of the university.

NTU is composed of five campuses with the main campus located in Daan District, Taipei City. Most of the colleges and administrative offices are housed in the main campus. The other campuses are Shuiyuan Campus in Zhongzheng District, Taipei; College of Medicine Campus in Zhongzheng District; Zhubei Campus in Hsinchu County; and Yunlin Campus in Yunlin County.

NTU has produced many distinguished alumni throughout its history. It was the alma mater of several Taiwan presidents namely Chen Shui-bian, Lee Teng-hui, Ma Ying-jeou, and the country’s first female president, Tsai Ing-Wen. Yuan T. Lee, who received a Nobel Prize in Chemistry, is also a graduate of NTU as well as Turing Award laureate Andrew Yao.

Today, NTU remains the nation’s number one university in terms of the depth of academic fields and the volume of programs it offers. Courses taught in both Chinese and English are abundant, ensuring that local and international students will be able to have the most extensive range of academic programs available to them.
