Facts About University of Science and Technology of China (USTC)

The University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) is one of China’s national research universities. The institution is being run directly by the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Moreover, it is considered a Class A Double First Class University by the Chinese Ministry of Education. It is also a C9 League member, which is the Chinese version of the Ivy League.

The university was originally founded in 1958 by the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Its original campus was in Beijing. The founding of the university was deemed a major event in China’s scientific and education history. The initial aim of the university was to establish a top-level technology and science workforce for the country as this was key to China’s development in the areas of science, defense, economy, and technology education.

At the start of 1970, it was moved to Hefei, Anhui, the university’s current home. This was during the Cultural Revolution. The university quickly became renowned for the quality of its education and research. In 1999, it was chosen as one of the nine universities to be given priority support by the government.

The school’s academics are virtually geared towards the pursuit of the country’s national interest. Moreover, it is being run under the principle of pioneering innovations. Its ethos is to put theory and practice, teaching and research, and science and technology together. This is the thrust of the university’s 12 schools and their respective departments.

Its 12 schools include those of the Earth and Space Sciences, Engineering Science, Physical Sciences, Mathematical Sciences, Public Affairs, and Software Engineering, among others. Each is made up of its own divisions or departments. They conduct their own research and research-based education in specialized areas and research endeavors. Moreover, USTC hosts many research institutions and organizations.

The university runs nine National Level Research Institutions. These organizations and their respective infrastructures and facilities are high-value assets for the country. These are the (1) National Synchrotron Radiation Laboratory, (2) Hefei National Laboratory for Physical Sciences at Microscale, (3) State Key Laboratory of Fire Science, (4) State Key Laboratory of Particle Detection and Electronics, (5) National Engineering Laboratory of Speech and Language Information Processing, (6) National High Performance Computing Center, (7) Mengcheng National Geophysical Observatory, (8) High Magnetic Field Laboratory, Chinese Academy of Science, and the (9) Synergetic Innovation Center of Quantum Information and Quantum Physics. In addition, the university runs 45 provincial- and ministerial-level research institutions and 19 institution-department joint labs.

The university also hosts Campus Societies that lead the student body in various activities surrounding particular interests. There are groups for enthusiasts in robotics, computer, sci-fi, and street dance, among many others.
