HES-SO University of Applied Sciences and Arts Western Switzerland is a group of higher education institutions spread across the seven cantons of Western Switzerland. Established in 1998, the university is a nationally recognized institution and member of the swissuniversities.

HES-SO has six faculties where its programs and research activities are managed and delivered. Its faculties are Business, Management, and Services; Music and Performing Arts; Social Work; Design and Fine Arts; Engineering and Architecture; and Health. The university has an estimated 21,000 students and is the largest university of applied sciences in Switzerland. Each faculty offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and continuing education programs that span a wide range of study courses.

The Faculty of Business, Management, and Services, for example, offers undergraduate programs in Hospitality Management, International Business Management, and Business Economics. For its postgraduate programs, students can choose from courses such as Wine and Management Hospitality, and Information Science.

Meanwhile, the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture offers undergraduate courses such as Industrial Engineering and Management; Building Technology; Viticulture and Oenology; and Energy and Environmental Techniques. Its postgraduate programs include Architecture, Life Sciences, and Integrated Innovation for Product and Business Development - Innokick.

HES-SO’s continuing education courses can lead to four qualifications: MAS or Master of Advanced Studies; DAS or Diploma of Advanced Studies; EMBA or Executive Master of Business Administration; and CAS or Certificate of Advanced Studies. Special courses can also be designed for companies, organizations, and other groups looking for a competent partner to train their staff. Examples of continuing education courses are Watchmaking Design, Quality and Strategy Management, Design Research for Digital Innovation, Energy and Sustainable Development in the Built Environment, and Design for Luxury and Craftsmanship.

HES-SO University of Applied Sciences and Arts Western Switzerland had its beginnings in 1996 when the ordinance for the creation of universities of applied sciences was signed. A little over a decade in 2007, the university added new master’s programs such as those in Music, Engineering Sciences, Business, Management and Services, Design, and Fine Arts. This was followed by the Master’s in Nursing Sciences in 2009 and the Masters in Territorial Engineering and Masters in Theater in 2011.

Today, HES-SO has several affiliated schools across regions in the country. These include HES-SO HE ARC (Berne, Jura, Neuchâtel); HES-SO Fribourg; HES-SO Genève; HES-SO Valais-Wallis; and HES-SO Vaud.

Accomplished and renowned HES-SO alumni can be found in different fields such as politics, arts, music, and business. These include composer Éric Gaudibert; politician Johanna Gapany; writer Cécile Lauber; and photojournalist Jean Revillard.
