Facts About University of Tennessee

The University of Tennessee (UTK), located in Knoxville, Tennessee, consists of 10 undergraduate colleges and 11 graduate schools with a focus on studies and research in the fields of public policy, biomedical sciences, environmental science, aerospace engineering and agriculture.

UTK itself is the main campus of the University of Tennessee system, a network of public universities in the state. Some of its notable affiliated institutions include the Howard H. Baker Jr. Center for Public Policy, the University of Tennessee Arboretum and the University of Tennessee Anthropological Research Facility. UTK is also a partner of the University of Tennessee Medical Center.

Founded in 1794, UTK is older than its host state, having been established two years prior to statehood. In fact, the institution is one of the oldest public universities in the United States with an estimated 28,000 student population from across the U.S. and other countries.

In September 1794, Blount College was established, which would become the foundation of UTK. The college was elevated to become East Tennessee University in 1840 and renamed to its current name about 40 years later by the state. During the Second World War, UTK offered a U.S. Navy commission program, along with over 130 schools in the country to help in the war effort.

Notable alumni and faculty include James Buchanan (Nobel Prize laureate for economics), Harry McSween (leading expert in meteorites study and member of numerous Mars expedition programs) and Barry Rouse (award-winning professor in microbiology).

UTK’s agricultural campus is home to 21 departments offering 11 bachelor’s degrees, 14 graduate programs and other academic programs. Likewise, the university’s Cherokee Research Campus has dedicated teaching and research facilities for nanotechnology, materials science, energy and climate studies, neutron science, biomedical sciences and environmental science.

Moreover, its extension campus, the University of Tennessee Space Institute in Tullahoma, TN offers research and graduate studies in aerospace engineering, including hypersonic flight and related fields. The campus has notable wind tunnels capable of supersonic speed, such as Mach 2, Mach 2.3 and Mach 4. The university is also known for its nuclear security research and initiatives run by UTK’s Institute for Nuclear Security.

UTK also has direct cooperation with its neighbor, the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, on academic and applied research. Likewise, it administers the teaching and training programs for the University of Tennessee Medical Center, the primary referral center in East Tennessee, Southeastern Kentucky and Western North Carolina.
