The University of Houston (UH) is the central university of the University of Houston System and one of the largest institutions of higher education in Texas. The public university is known for its high research activity and strong business programs. As such, it is classified as an R1: Doctoral University and is a member of the Universities Research Association, a consortium of distinguished research universities in the United States, Canada, and Europe.

UH is organized into 16 academic colleges and schools, covering disciplines like Business, Engineering, Law, Medicine, and Pharmacy. It offers around 250 undergraduate majors and minors, 108 postgraduate programs, and 50 doctoral and professional degrees. Among these, the most highly regarded ones include Business Management, Hospitality and Leisure Management, Chemical Engineering, Psychology, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, and Physics.

Research in UH is conducted in its 36 centers, five of which are nationally-funded facilities. Some of the university’s high priority studies fall under four research thrusts—cyber and physical security, drug discovery and development, sustainable communities and infrastructure, and accessible healthcare. In addition, UH has earned significantly large royalties from tech transfers. They also collaborate with numerous organizations and industries.

Measuring 667 acres, the UH campus features green spaces embellished with fountains and remarkable landscaping. The areas of note include an open stadium that accommodates 40,000 people, a baseball park, a performance hall, art museums, an opera center, and a large roster of restaurants and dining areas. UH’s library network carries over 3.2 million volumes and around 160,000 journals.

Established in 1927, UH was once the Houston Junior College, which offered programs to train educators. Its first classes were attended by 232 learners and 12 teachers. In 1934, the institution gained university status and was renamed the University of Houston. As a university, it initially received 682 enrollees.

As of 2020, UH welcomes over 38,000 undergraduates, 8,800 postgraduates, and 2,600 teaching staff. It awards over 10,000 degrees annually and contributes more than $3 billion to the Texas economy each year. The university also has a renowned sports team, the Houston Cougars, that competes in the NCAA Division I. In addition, UH is associated with a Nobel laureate and has produced a long list of athletes, politicians, and entertainers.

UH’s notable alumni include Hakeem Olajuwon (NBA player), Elizabeth Warren (US senator), Jim Parsons (actor), Christine Ha (chef), Lil Wayne (rapper), and Carl Lewis (runner).

UH aims to become even more nationally competitive in the fields of research, education, and athletics and forge more partnerships with esteemed organizations. It is also committed to maintaining an environment that stimulates the holistic development of its learners.
