Facts About University of Cologne

The University of Cologne (UoC) is one of the biggest universities in Germany and one of the earliest to be established in Central Europe. It is also classified as a German Excellence University for its high level of teaching and research. Education in the public university is characterized by the early introduction of research in the curricula and the freedom to choose and combine disciplines granted to students.

Founded in 1388, UoC is the fourth institution for higher education built in the Holy Roman Empire. It held its first classes in 1389. When the French invaded Cologne in 1798, the university was closed down. It was reinstated in 1919 through the endorsement of the Prussian government.

Today, UoC is organized into six faculties, focusing on Law, Medicine, Mathematics, Natural Sciences, Arts and Humanities, Human Sciences, and Management, Economics and Social Sciences. The school offers more than 100 undergraduate and postgraduate programs, which permit over 300 course combinations.

UoC is widely known for its programs for aspiring teachers as a large proportion of the student body is enrolled in a teaching course. Other notable courses include History, Archaeology, Anthropology, Linguistics, Philosophy, Economics, Law, and Business.

Research in UoC is conducted in its 16 centers, with its high-priority research condensed into six key areas: aging-associated illnesses, quantum matter and materials, plant science, language and cognition, behavioral economic engineering, and cultures and societies. It collaborates with renowned German research groups like the Max-Planck Society and the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centres as well as local and international universities.

UoC’s campus also has a significant number of museums and collections, including a geological museum, a Kathy Acker archive, and Egyptian and prehistoric collections. Meanwhile, its library network carries over eight million books and 62,000 journals. The university holds many events and cultural activities. Students can attend concerts and theater performances as well as join the school’s sports programs, a photo competition, and guided tours to the city.

As of 2020, UoC is attended by more than 48,000 students and 7,000 teaching staff. It has partnered with over 20 reputable universities from four continents and has collaboration agreements with over 260 universities. The university has also produced several Nobel laureates, heads of state, and entrepreneurs.

UoC’s notable alumni include Karl Carstens (German president), Gustav Heinemann (German president), Karolos Papoulias (Greek president), Kurt Alder (chemist), Heinrich Böll (writer), and Erich Gutenberg (economist).
