Facts About Polytechnic University of Catalonia
The Polytechnic University of Catalonia, or Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC), is a public university for research and higher education located in the city of Barcelona, Spain. It is one of the leading polytechnics in Europe, and it focuses on the fields of Science, Technology, Architecture, and Engineering. It also has the biggest share of international master’s degree students in Europe, plus it ranks as one of the top technical universities with the highest number of international Ph.D. students.
The Universitat Politècnica de Barcelona (UPB) came into existence in 1971 through a merger between several architecture and engineering schools, some of which were established in the early 1900s. After amalgamating several other colleges and schools in Catalonia, the university rebranded to its current name in 1984. Since then, the university has grown tremendously to become one of the largest institutions of engineering in Catalonia.
The UPC has 25 schools located in different cities of Barcelona, Manresa, Castelldefels, Vilanova I la Geltrú, Terrassa, Sant Cugat del Vallès, and Mataró. The schools are further divided into 30 departments that allow the institution to offer various courses and programs of studies.
Currently, UPC offers 64 bachelor’s, 75 master’s, and 45 doctoral degrees. In addition, the university offers more than 241 continuing education programs. UPC ranks among the best 50 universities in the world in disciplines such as Civil Engineering, Telecommunications Engineering, Architecture, and Electrical and Electronic Engineering.
At present, UPC is home to more than 28,000 students, with more than 22,600 enrolled in bachelor’s degree programs; the rest are masters, doctoral, and lifelong learning students. To support research and academic operation, the university has a team of more than 3,100 teaching and research staff members. Moreover, there are over 2,000 administrative and service staff employees to deliver support service to students.
As of 2019, the Polytechnic University of Catalonia has produced more than 62,000 alumni, including some notable names, such as Francesc Torres Torres (rector of UPC), Bjarke Ingels (founder of Bjarke Ingels Group), Mateo Valero Cortés (renowned Spanish architect), and Jordi Farré I Muñoz (Catalan businessman).
The university has various institutes, departments, laboratories, and centers created to facilitate basic and applied research. The research facilities include five research institutes (four of its own and one is an affiliated center) created to reinforce technical and scientific research efforts. In addition, there are several libraries and research entities built to support research in specific fields. The facilities place the institution at the top of research, innovation, and technological development. It is no surprise, therefore, that in 2019, the Polytechnic University of Catalonia registered a total of 15 patents.Read Less...
