Facts About Case Western Reserve University

Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) is a private research university located in Cleveland, Ohio. Its campus is near the historic Wade Park District in University Circle—famous for its lush greeneries, park-like urban environment, and business center where many religious, medical, educational, and cultural institutions converge.

The university was founded when two long-established neighboring universities, Western Reserve University (founded in 1826) and Case Institute of Technology (founded in 1880), merged in 1967.

Case Western Reserve University comprises eight schools and colleges as well as over 100 interdisciplinary research and academic centers and institutes. These include Weatherhead School of Management, School of Medicine, School of Law, School of Graduate Studies, School of Dental Medicine, Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences, Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing, College of Arts and Sciences, and Case School of Engineering.

The university offers almost a hundred undergraduate degree-granting courses, over a hundred graduate and professional programs, and over a hundred dual-degree programs. Its top undergraduate courses are information technology, accounting and financial services, engineering, research and science, and nursing. On the other hand, its popular graduate majors include psychology, mechanical engineering, nursing, social work, biology/biological sciences, and biomedical engineering.

Aside from its in-house faculty, CWRU collaborates with experts from other Cleveland-based institutions in teaching several programs. These include those from the Louis Stokes Cleveland Department of Veteran's Affairs Medical Center, the Cleveland Hearing and Speech Center, Cleveland Play House, and the Cleveland Museum of Natural History, to name a few.

Case Western Reserve University is classified as a top-tier research university in the US. It has produced the first American Nobel laureate, Albert A. Michelson, who, along with Edward W. Morley, conducted the acclaimed Michelson–Morley interferometer experiment in a CWRU campus dormitory in 1887. Michelson won the Nobel prize in science in 1907. Since then, a total 16 CWRU alumni had won the prestigious Nobel prize in their various fields.

The university has other pioneering feats such as establishing the first computer engineering degree program in the country in 1971. The course was also the first ABET-accredited program in the field.

Further enhancing its reputation, the university is home to world-class business incubators. For instance, the Larry Sears and Sally Zlotnick Sears think[box], Veal Institute for Entrepreneurship, and CWRU LaunchNET are based in the campus, providing students, faculty, and partners with access to funding and industry knowledge and networking.

Students are also active in non-academic activities, including sports, clubs, arts/cultural groups, etc.
