Also called UniMi or Statale, it is among the largest universities in Europe, one that consistently maintains one of the lowest student-lecturer ratios in the country, too.

The University of Milan offers more than two hundred undergraduate and graduate degree-granting programmes. Its research and teaching activities have constantly expanded year after year, gaining key international recognitions.

The university consists of 10 Schools (facoltà) teaching and researching an extensive range of disciplinary fields. These are the School of Linguistics and Cultural Mediation, School of Political, Economic and Social Sciences, School of Exercise and Sport Sciences, School of Science and Technology, School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, School of Agricultural and Food Sciences, School of Veterinary Medicine, School of Humanities, School of Medicine, and School of Law.

Furthermore, it is the only Italian member and one of the founders of the League of European Research Universities, an elite association of 21 research-intensive European universities. Its research involves over 30 departments and more than 50 research centers publishing thousands of reports and articles annually.

The university has produced notable alumni in their various fields of specialization, including Nobel laureate in physics Riccardo Giacconi, Fields medalist Enrico Bombieri, computer scientist Nicolò Cesa-Bianchi, and writer-philosopher Giuseppe Scaraffia.

The University of Milan is also known in collegiate and amateur sports. For over half a century, its University Sports Centre (Centro Universitario Sportivo) has served as an amateur sports association that promotes sports and physical education among students and partners.

UniMi students are also active in the theatrical and musical front under the leadership of the university’s in-house cultural organizations.
