Facts About Rovira i Virgili University

Rovira i Virgili University (RVU) is a nationally and globally recognized research and academic institution. Officially founded in 1991, it was formed by combining existing university centers in Tarragona and Reus, one of which dates back to the 16th-century (Tarragona University). It was named after Antoni Rovira i Virgili, a Spanish journalist, politician, and former president of Catalonia’s Parliament after the Spanish Civil War. Today, it has six campuses in the Catalan region, specifically in the cities of Reus and Tarragona in Spain.

While still a relatively young educational institution, its student population and available degree programs have been steadily growing. Additionally, it has qualified as a member of various educational consortia such as the European University Association (EUA), the International Network of Universities (INU), and SGroup European Universities’ Network, among others.

The university offers bachelor, graduate, and postgraduate programs across 12 schools and faculties, namely (1) Faculty of Law, (2) Faculty of Nursing, (3) Faculty of Arts, (4) Faculty of Chemistry, (5) Faculty of Oenology, (6) Faculty of Education Sciences and Psychology, (7) Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, (8) Faculty of Business and Economics, (9) Faculty of Tourism and Geography, (10) School of Chemical Engineering (ETSEQ), (11) School of Engineering (ETSE), and (12) School of Architecture (ETSA). All of its courses are adapted to the European Higher Education Area. Aside from degree-granting programs, it also offers lifelong learning courses to the rest of the population.

In addition to its faculties and schools, Rovira i Virgili University also houses numerous technology and innovation centers that are recognized across Europe and around the world. Each center has its own specific missions, goals, research objectives, and initiatives. Some of these centers are the Technological Innovation Centre in Electrical Engineering (CITEE) and the Environmental and Industrial Applications of Catalysis (AMIC). They also house government research centers such as the Membrane Technology and Process Engineering (METEOR)

Aside from the abovementioned, URV also serves as home to the Research Center on Engineering of Materials and Micro/NanoSystems (EMAS), the Research Centre on Industrial Economics and Public Economics (CREIP), and the Tarragona Centre for Environmental Law Studies (CEDAT). Currently, RVU specializes in research in Chemistry, Archaeology, Oenology, Tourism, Energy, Economy, Law, Education, and the Environment.

As part of the expansion of its research and educational initiatives, several institutes are also placed under the university. These bodies were created to carry research endeavors, courses, and studies that are mostly available not only to the universities but also to the public. Each institute focuses on a specific area of study. Some of these are the Institute of Education Sciences of the Universitat Rovira i Virgili (ICE), the Pere Virgili Institute for Health Research (IISPV), and the Catalonia Institute for Energy Research (IREC).

The university implements the URV teaching model, which is composed of five core aspects: innovation, internationalization, transversal skills, social engagement, and operability. These are also evident in URV’s social and internationalization activities, such as scientific dissemination activities, gender equality plans, and international cooperations.

Rovira i Virgili University is also currently implementing its Strategic Plan of the Third Mission as its drive to improve its academic and social endeavors. The plan revolves around converging the university and the Catalan territory. It will focus specifically on different axes such as social, volunteering, and development cooperation; knowledge transfer and technology; and socioeconomic and regional governance, among others.
