Facts About Ben-Gurion University of the Negev

Ben-Gurion University of the Negev (BGU) in Beer-Sheva is the only university in Israel that was established by government mandate. The leading research university was founded in 1969 and started offering courses in sociology, anthropology, and psychology through the Department of Behavioral Sciences. These programs were the first in the country.

BGU runs five faculties: Engineering Sciences, Natural Sciences, Humanities and Social Sciences, Health Sciences, and Business and Management. Under these are 51 academic apartments. Additionally, the university has seven schools. Among those are the Joyce and Irving Goldman Medical School, the Kreitman School of Advanced Graduate Studies, and the School for Medical Laboratory Sciences.

The university conducts its classes at its main campus in Beer-Sheva. Among its courses, Ben-Gurion University is well-known for computer science. It is likewise highly regarded for programs under the Faculty of Health Sciences and the Medical School.

Meanwhile, its research activities are conducted mainly at its two other locations: Sede Boqer and Eilat. There are eight research institutes under BGU. A few of these are the Jacob Blaustein Institutes for Desert Research, the Ben-Gurion Research Institute for the Study of Israel and Zionism, and Heksherim or the Research Institute for Jewish and Israeli Literature and Culture.

Among the many areas of research that Ben-Gurion University of the Negev is focused on are homeland security, alternative energy sources, biotechnology and agricultural technology, and human genetics. These are conducted in the 41 research centers of the university: 22 are initiated by the institution itself while 19 are initiated by faculty members.

The university operates a technology transfer company called BGN Technologies. It manages the institution’s patent portfolio and projects with external collaborators, including companies and foundations.

The application of research findings is exemplified by the university’s Green Campus initiative as well. It has policies regarding sustainability, is committed to energy efficiency, and promotes educational and community activities related to the project. Apart from this, researchers and students alike apply their solutions towards making the digital world a safer place.

Ben-Gurion University of the Negev is active in the community in other ways, such as in the advancement of industries like agriculture and education in the area. Students take part in the social and community projects of the university. In addition, they can also be one with the community through the 80 open-apartments in Beer-Sheva.
