Facts About Florida Atlantic University
Florida Atlantic University (Florida Atlantic or FAU) is a public university classified as an R2: Doctoral University with high research activity. FAU’s main campus is at Boca Raton, Florida, while auxiliary campuses can be found in Fort Pierce, Fort Lauderdale, Davie, Jupiter, and Dania Beach.
Founded in 1961 to cater to the educational needs of South Florida, the university was built on what remained of a WWII Army base. It was first intended to help the state’s community college system and accept students who earned associate degrees from them. It was on October 25, 1964, that the university officially opened and had its dedication on the same day. As a part of the dedication ceremonies, President Lyndon B. Johnson was awarded the first honorary degree.
Since then, the university took on massive expansion efforts in both its academic offerings and research engagement. Today, the university is led by the university’s ten colleges. They are the (1) Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine, (2) Charles E. Schmidt College of Science, (3) Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing, (4) College of Business, (5) Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters, (6) Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College, (7) College of Engineering and Computer Science, (8) College of Education, (9) College of Nursing, and the (10) Graduate College. These and their respective departments are home to more than 180 programs for bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees.
The wide variety of programs offered by these colleges and their respective departments include those for Anthropology, Biological Sciences, Commercial Music, Geosciences, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Classical Studies, and Mathematical Sciences, among many others.
Moreover, two centers of excellence found their home in Florida Atlantic. They are the Center for Ocean Energy Technology and the Center of Excellence in Biomedical and Marine Biotechnology. Selected by Florida’s Emerging Technology Commission, these centers of excellence receive grants and funding to expand their operations.
FAU has four research focus areas that are served by university-wide research institutes. These institutes are the (a) Brain Institute, (b) Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute, (c) Institute for Human Health and Disease Intervention, and (d) Institute for Sensing and Embedded Network Systems Engineering. These institutes play to the university’s strengths and help FAU foster a collaborative and interdisciplinary research culture.
Additionally, Florida Atlantic hosts two of the world’s top research organizations. These are the nonprofit Scripps Research Institute and the prestigious Max Planck Florida Institute of Neuroscience. Both provide life-changing experiences for not only graduate and undergraduate students but also high school students.
FAU also has high-tech and well-maintained facilities providing academic resources and social activities to students, faculty, staff, and researchers. These include housing, aquatic research facilities, a student-led music record label, and a movie theater, among others. Lastly, the university also offers entrepreneurial support to students through its small business development programs and incubators.Read Less...
