Facts About Koc University

Koç University, or Koç Üniversitesi Turkish, is a non-profit private university located in Istanbul, Turkey. Founded in 1993, this comprehensive and research-intensive university is considered one of the most prestigious higher education institutions in the country. It has come a long way from starting out in a temporary location in İstinye before moving in 2000 to its current campus in Rumelifeneri near Sarıyer.

The university currently offers 22 undergraduate, 29 graduate, and 30 Ph.D. degree programs. The majority of subjects are taught in English, with a few exceptions in the School of Nursing and School of Law.

Koç University is home to about 7,000 students, including international enrollees. Koç University attracts students with the highest scores from top high schools in Turkey, such as Koç School, Istanbul High School, Uskudar American Academy, and Robert College. This can be attributed to its low student-faculty ratio of 12:1, which helps ensure that students get higher-quality education. Additionally, although the university is private, it offers scholarships for high-caliber undergraduate and graduate students.

Since its establishment, Koç University has been using a student-oriented and progressive approach to learning. Its educational philosophy is based on the principle of participatory learning and creative teaching. As such, the university promotes the search for knowledge and truth through creativity, research, and even criticism. Its instruction and curriculum revolve around encouraging inquisitive minds to participate in academic discussion and extra-curricular activities. Because of this, Koç University considers liberal arts education necessary.

Furthermore, Koç University has an extensive network of partner universities, including Cornell University, Northwestern University, Georgetown University, and the University of California. These affiliations, in part, allow the university to invite globally renowned academics and industry leaders for lectures and similar events. With over 250 top-ranked partner institutions all over the globe, the university is able to facilitate student exchange and international research collaboration.

Koç University is also known for facilitating significant research work conducted in its colleges: Humanities and Social Sciences, Administrative Sciences and Economics, Engineering, Law, Natural Sciences, and Medicine. Striving to be a global center for research, Koç University has 194 research laboratories and 21 research centers. It also hosts five research and education forums. Moreover, the university has been a top awardee of the TÜBİTAK (Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey) research awards. It is also one of the top three universities in the country that has the most publications and citation records per faculty.
