Facts About Swinburne University of Technology
Swinburne University of Technology (Swinburne) is a public research university located about 10 minutes from the city center of Melbourne in Australia. Founded in 1908, the university has gradually morphed into a world-class institution that leads the way in fields such as technology, science, and art and design.
Swinburne’s journey to the top began when George Swinbure formed the Eastern Suburbs Technical College at Hawthorns. The college was initially founded to open the pathway to success for students without access to higher education in Melbourne. It opened its doors in 1909 and enrolled the first class of 80 students who received education in mechanics and plumbing. In 1913, the college changed its name to the Swinburne Technical College, and in 1992 it attained university status and was finally renamed to Swinburne University of Technology.
At present, the university has grown and expanded from one campus to three, namely the Hawthorn Campus (main campus), Croydon Campus, and the Wantirna Campus. In addition, Swinburne has other educational centers in Sydney and in Sarawak, Malaysia. All these campuses and centers are provided with state-of-the-art facilities and conducive learning environments to support students in their studies.
The Hawthorn campus, being the university’s headquarters, is home to a wide selection of undergraduate, postgraduate, and vocational training programs. Croydon campus offers courses in fields such as Carpentry, Building, Plumbing, and Electrical. On the other hand, the Wantirna campus is founded with a focus on courses in Visual Arts, Accounting, Business, and Health and Community.
To support innovative research, Swinburne provides cutting-edge research facilities and equipment. Some of the notable facilities include the Advanced Manufacturing Industry 4.0 Hub, the Design Factory Melbourne, several data cloud innovation centers, and the Swinburne Innovation Precinct. Moreover, there are three libraries, one in each of the three campuses, stocked with the resource to support learning and research in the university.
The university is organized around three broad faculties: Business and Law; Health, Arts and Design; and Science, Engineering and Technology. The faculties are divided into eight schools, which are further subdivided into 20 departments. These provide a wide range of courses, which include vocational training courses as well as bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degree programs.
Swinburne University of Technology started with merely 80 young men, but as of 2017, the institution was home to more than 42,147 students from all walks of life. In total, the university has more than 2,500 employees, which include over 750 teaching and research staff, more than 200 vocational training staff, and over 800 professional staff.
In addition, Swinburne has more than 200,000 alumni across over 140 countries. The list of alumni include notable names, such as Dimity Hawkins (Co-founder of ICAN), Andrew Dominik (film director), Kale Von Moller (film director), and Sam Hammington (South Korean comedian).Read Less...
