Università della Svizzera italiana, usually abbreviated as USI and also referred to as the University of Lugano, is a public university whose main campus is in Lugano, Canto Ticino, Switzerland. It also has campuses in Mendrisio and Bellinzona. The university, established in 1996, is an Italian-speaking institution and the only one of its kind in Switzerland. It is one of the 12 certified public universities in the country and is a member of the organization called swissuniversities.
The liberal university has five faculties: Informatics, Economics, Biomedical Sciences, the Academy of Architecture, and Communication, Culture, and Social Sciences. At the undergraduate level, these faculties offer only six programs. However, it has 24 master’s degree programs and 12 doctoral programs as well as nine advanced study programs.
Research at USI is interdisciplinary and oftentimes undertaken with national and international partners. It has scientific inquiries in nine areas, including architecture, data science, humanities, informatics, law, and biomedicine. The dedication to research by the University of Lugano has allowed it to attract grants from the Swiss National Science Foundation and the European Union. The university has received funding from the Swiss National Science Foundation, the Swiss Conference of Higher Education, the Swiss Innovation Agency, and other organizations. On average, Università della Svizzera italiana receives 18 million Swiss francs in research funding annually from those bodies.
Faculty members and researchers with the university have also received prestigious awards, some of which included monetary endowments, like the Dreyfus Prize, the Robert Koch Award, ERC Grants, Sanofi-Pasteur Institute Award, and the so-called Swiss Nobel Prize, the Marcel Benoist Prize.
Each faculty of the University of Lugano carries out research projects through its institutes with the exception of the Faculty of Biomedical Sciences. The aforementioned faculty conducts its scientific inquiries through its two affiliated institutes, the Institute for Research in Biomedicine and the Institute of Oncology Research. These are independent of the USI administration.
There are more than 100 research projects ongoing at Università della Svizzera italiana at a time. The university has completed more than 1,100 of those since its founding. These are done either within the university or in collaboration with any of its 110 partner universities and institutes. The institution is also involved in research platforms like the Swiss Competence Centres for Energy Research, the National Centres of Competence in Research, and the Platform for Advanced Scientific Computing.
