Georgia State University, located in Atlanta, Georgia, is a public research university established in 1913. It is part of the University System of Georgia, along with 25 other institutions, and is one of the four research universities in the group. It is the largest university in Georgia by enrollment and is one of the top 10 largest in the United States by number of students.

The comprehensive university has 12 colleges, including the Byrdine F. Lewis College of Nursing and Health Professions, Honors College, Andrew Young School of Policy Studies, Perimeter College, and the Graduate School. These offer over 250 undergraduate and graduate degree programs, including associate degrees across 100 fields of study.

In its 110-acre campus, Georgia State University provides residence halls with dining areas for students. There are also university lofts where students can live with their families. Nearby are cafes, stationery shops, and department stores where students can relax, study, and acquire resources they might need for school and in their living spaces. They can also visit the University Library, which is divided into Library North and Library South, for a quiet study space or for borrowing computers, using software, loaning equipment, and for printing, copying, and scanning services.

Georgia State University is rated as a university with very high research activity. It earned $150.2 million in funding for the fiscal year 2020, the sixth time that the university has exceeded $100 million in grants. The funds go to the university’s five Core Laboratories and Facilities as well as High Containment Laboratories.

The research facilities are active in undertaking important projects. The flagship facility Center for High Angular Resolution Astronomy or CHARA uses a six-telescope optical/infrared interferometric array situated in Mount Wilson, California, to study the astrophysical properties of stars. It is responsible for the first images of a nova explosion and of starspots on a magnetically active star. At the Center for Advanced Brain Imaging, researchers are busy looking into the structure and function of the brain. Meanwhile, the High Containment Laboratories are concerned with highly infectious diseases. One of the most current inquiries at the laboratories is regarding the novel coronavirus.

Georgia State University is part of the Georgia Research Alliance. This initiative allows university scientists in the state to share research facilities and equipment. Some of the most advanced technologies involved in this project are systems imaging, such as MRI, telescopes, and microscopes.

True to its mission of readying students for their professional pursuits, Georgia State University has produced actors, musicians, writers, politicians, scientists, and professional sportsmen. These include musician and actor Ludacris, Grammy winner Dru Castro, William DuVall of the rock band Alice in Chains, former Speaker of the Georgia House of Representatives Glenn Richardson, primatologist Sue Savage-Rumbaugh, and professional female beach volleyball player Beth Van Fleet.
