Facts About Polytechnic University of Milan

Polytechnic University of Milan is a public technical university in Milan, Italy, that has exhibited, over the years, a good reputation in the study of engineering and technology, civil and structural engineering, aerospace engineers, mechanical engineering, and architecture. In particular, the university’s Business School is considered one of the prominent management schools in Italy earning, at one time, 96th place in the world from Financial Times.

The main campus in Milan houses most of the undergraduate and graduate faculties including research, even as the university maintains satellite locations in Lombardy and Emilia-Romagna areas.

The university offers more than 30 bachelor degrees, several of which follow a three-year completion period, while graduate programs are also offered either in one- or two-year courses. An academic year is divided into two semesters between September to January and March to June. In both undergraduate and graduate levels, a student is required to complete 60 university credits in one school year.

Foreign exchange programs are also available for students wanting international exposure during their stay in the university. Conversely, several courses are offered in English, Spanish, and German for foreign students.

In terms of research output, Polytechnic University of Milan actively participates in scientific projects in Europe and worldwide. For instance, it was involved in around 60 international research studies in 2004. Congruent to its research efforts, the university operated the first nuclear reactor for research in the country from 1959 to 1979, and it manages to this day other key research laboratories including Europe’s biggest wind tunnels.

Founded in 1863, Polytechnic University of Milan is the oldest tertiary school in the city and the largest of its type in the country enrolling about 42,000 students in 2017 alone. The university started with civil and industrial engineering courses only at the time it was founded as Instituto Tecnico Superiore. Thereafter, more degree programs followed as the university evolved through the years. In 1865, architecture was introduced. Decades later, it opened a center for electronic computation, the first in Europe, as well as helped launch the Sirio satellite in 1977 in collaboration with the private sector.

The eighties would see Polytechnic University of Milan further expand, opening its other campuses. In 1993, the university introduced industrial design precursing the opening of a faculty in design courses seven years later. The faculty offers undergraduate and graduate studies on graphic design, interior design and fashion.

As recent as 2012, the institution would go through another milestone when graduate courses shifted to English as the medium of instruction. However, this was not without partial objection from the country’s highest court that mandated the Italian language should not be abolished altogether.

Notable alumni include Renzo Piano (architect), Nobel Prize winner Giulio Natta, and Carlo Emilio Gadda (novelist).
