Facts About University of Hawaii

The University of Hawaii is a public university and college system that offers associate, bachelor’s, master’s, and doctorate degree programs across a wide range of disciplines. The school system is composed of three universities, seven colleges, four education centers, one employment training center, and other facilities spread across the six islands of Hawai’i. All of the schools under the UH system are recognized by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges.

The university system is headquartered at its main campus, the University of Hawaii at Mānoa, which is situated in Honolulu. Originally called the College of Hawaii, the university was established in 1903 as a land-grant college. It officially opened in 1907 in a temporary campus in downtown Honolulu and initially offered courses in mechanical arts and agriculture. In 1912, it moved to Mānoa Valley and in 1920, its College of Arts and Sciences was added, consequently elevating its status to a university.

Today, the University of Hawaii at Mānoa offers undergraduate and graduate degrees, including doctorate programs in over 50 areas of study. Among the programs they offer include Hawaiian/Pacific Studies, Marine Science, Asian Studies, East Asian Languages and Literature, Second Language Studies, and Comparative Philosophy. The Mānoa campus also offers courses in Business, Law, Medicine, Mathematics, Engineering, and more.

The University of Hawaii at Mānoa is also home to the Hawaii Institute of Geophysics and Planetology and the Pacific Biosciences Research Center, as well as the John A. Burns School of Medicine and the William S. Richardson School of Law.

The University of Hawaii at Hilo is the system’s second-largest university. Founded in 1970, it is located on what is known as the "Big Island" of Hawaii. It is the location of the university’s College of Hawaiian Language, which offers a master’s program in the study of Hawaiian language and literature. The Kalakaua Marine Education Center and the Center for the Study of Active Volcanoes also operate from the University of Hawaii at Hilo.

Meanwhile, the University of Hawaii-West Oahu in Kapolei was founded in 1976. It caters to students residing in the western and suburban communities of Honolulu. The degree programs it offers are concentrated on liberal arts and practical applications.

The community colleges under the UH system are strategically located across the state. These were built to provide Hawaii residents with access to quality and affordable education that will help them transition from secondary school to college easier. The UH system also has education centers located in remote areas and islands to extend education to rural communities.
