The Technical University of Braunschweig, popularly known as TU Braunschweig, is a public technical university located in the small city of Braunschweig, Germany. Founded in 1745, TU Braunschweig is the oldest technical institute in Germany. It is a member of the prestigious TU9, a group of the best and largest schools focusing on technology in Germany. Besides, the university is perennially ranked as one of the leading German universities for engineering.
The university started in 1745 as the Collegium Carolinum Institution which is focused on teaching technical mathematics subjects alongside fine arts and humanities courses. In the late 1800s, the university changed its name twice -- first to Polytechnic School (1862) and then Herzogliche Technische Hochschule Carolo-Wilhelmina (TH) in 1878. By 1968, it incorporated the Departments of Social Sciences and Humanities, before being renamed Technische Universität TU Braunschweig.
At present, the university is organized around six faculties: Carl-Friedrich-Gauß; Life Sciences; Mechanical Engineering; Architecture, Civil Engineering and Environmental Sciences; Electrical Engineering, Information Technology and Physics; and Humanities and Educational Sciences. The faculties are divided into institutes, while some of the faculties are further subdivided into departments.
The university has 120 institutes and seminars created to streamline learning and research. Moreover, the university offers various vital facilities to make campus life better for students including the University Library, Language Centre, Sports Centre, and Gauss-IT Centre
Combined, the faculties offer more than 75 programs of study including more than 28 Bachelor’s and over 40 Master’s degree courses.
