Facts About University of Neuchatel
Université de Neuchâtel, or the University of Neuchatel in English, is a public university situated by the Lake Neuchatel in the Republic and Canton of Neuchatel, Switzerland. It started as the Academy of Neuchatel in 1838. Its foundation is attributed to the geologist and paleontologist Louis Agassiz. By the decree of the Grand Council of Neuchatel, the academy became the University of Neuchatel in 1909. The university used to follow the French education system but in 2005, it adopted the Bologna Process of a three-tiered system consisting of bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees.
The higher education institution mainly instructs its students in French but also offers courses in English in four faculties. These faculties are Arts and Humanities, Science, Law, and Economics and Business. The disciplines these cover are comprehensive and include archaeology, geology, language and communication pathology, ethnology, philosophy, natural systems, and applied economics.
Apart from traditional subjects, Université de Neuchâtel provides interdisciplinary courses as well that two or three faculties oversee together. For example, the Bachelor in Science in Biology and Ethnology is managed by the Faculty of Arts and Sciences and the Faculty of Science. In the case of the Master in Ethnomusicology degree, it is offered by the Faculty of Arts and Sciences and the university’s partners, the Haute école de musique and the University of Geneva.
Similarly, the university offers a FIFA Master in Management, Law, and Humanities of Sport in partnership with SDA Bocconi School of Management in Milan, Italy and De Montfort University in Leicester, England. This was organized by the International Centre for Sports Studies, an independent research and education organization also located in Neuchatel.
The University of Neuchatel’s faculties have their institutes, centers, and laboratories as well for research. In the case of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, it has five houses that oversee its key areas of scientific inquiry. These houses are Philosophy, Historical Sciences, Analysis of Social Processes, Literature, and Language and Communication Sciences. Overall, the institution has 42 institutes for research.
As a whole, the university has nine areas of focus when it comes to research. These are interdisciplinary, and thus interfaculty.
