Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg, otherwise known as the University of Wurzburg, is a research-driven public university in the state of Bavaria in Germany. It was founded in 1402, making it one of the oldest higher education institutions in the country. The university is named after Prince-Bishop Julius Echter von Mespelbrunn, who made permanent the endowment of the institution, and Elector Maximilian I. Joseph, the first king of Bavaria. The University of Wurzburg was almost razed to the ground during the bombing of the city by the Allies in 1945 but Bavaria invested heavily in its reconstruction and expansion that continued until the 1960s.
Those rebuilding efforts led to an extensive campus that houses the 10 faculties of the University of Wurzburg: Catholic Theology, Law, Medicine, Arts, Human Sciences, Biology, Chemistry and Pharmacy, Mathematics and Computer Science, Physics and Astronomy, and Business Management and Economics. These faculties offer an extensive range of 250 degree-earning programs.
The university is strongly invested in research and has had faculty members who won the Nobel Prize. Among these are Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen, who discovered the X-rays and became the first person to be awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1901, Emil Fischer whose discovery of the Fischer esterification earned him the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1902, and Johannes Stark who detected the Doppler Effect and consequently received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1919 for it. A handful of instructors with the institution have won the German Nobel Prize, the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Awards, as well. Those include Prof. Dr. Ulrich Heber who investigated the biochemistry of stress in plants and Prof. Dr. Dag Nikolaus Hasse whose research focus is on the Arabic history of philosophy.
Efforts by its students, faculty, and researchers today have secured the University of Wurzburg funding from the federal and state governments of Germany through the German Excellence Initiative. It has also earned grants from the European Research Council, which is the most prestigious form of funding in Europe for research. Researchers affiliated with the university are also among those frequently cited, making the institution rank high in the CWTS Leiden Ranking.
Many of the research undertakings are in line with the main areas of inquiry of the university: Life Sciences, Health Sciences, Molecular Chemistry and Materials, Quantum Phenomena in New Materials, Digital Society, Cultural Heritage, Norms and Behavior, and Global Changes.
