Facts About Iowa State University

Iowa State University of Science and Technology, commonly referred to as Iowa State University, is a public research university located in Ames, Iowa, founded in 1858 as a coeducational institution. It is a land-grant public research university that benefited from the Morrill Act of 1862 and became the first land-grant institution in the nation.

At the core of the university is the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. It offers practical courses to prime farmers and agriculturists for their careers. They conduct their experiments at the Iowa Agriculture and Home Economics Experiment Station. This was established in 1888 and was formerly known as the Agriculture Experiment Station. Its agricultural programs are also well regarded throughout the United States and globally.

Other colleges at Iowa State University include: College of Design, College of Engineering, College of Human Sciences, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, College of Veterinary Medicine, the Graduate College, and the Ivy College of Business. There are also two schools: the Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication and the School of Education. These colleges are further subdivided into 57 departments that offer 122 undergraduate majors, minors, and certificates, and 188 graduate programs, minors, and certificates.

Iowa State University is also research-driven and is rated as a university with very high research activity. It has 90 centers and institutes that are engaged in research on a wide array of topics. One of the projects that university researchers are invested in is the development of a COVID-19 nanovaccine. This is through a federal grant of $2 million from the CARES Act. The research is spearheaded by the personnel of the university’s Nanovaccine Institute.

The institution’s research undertakings have been beneficial to society. In 1896, George Washington Carver uncovered hundreds of uses for peanuts and potatoes. Computing can be traced to the university as well through a professor and a graduate student, John Vincent Atanasoff and Clifford Berry. The two came up with what became known as the first electronic digital computer. In 2011, materials scientist Dan Schechtman earned the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his work on quasicrystals.

Iowa State University was founded with the idea that higher education should be accessible to students regardless of their status. This is an idea that the institution carries on to this day, as it continues to accept students from all walks of life as well as students from outside of the U.S.
