Facts About University of Surrey

Located in Guildford, England, the University of Surrey is a public research university and one of the four universities in the University Global Partnership Network (UGPN). UGPN is an international collaboration of students from select top universities with a mission to conduct and accomplish innovative research studies to address global issues. The University of Surrey is also highly involved in developing 5G technology for mobile communications—a collaborative project with the University of Dresden and King’s College London.

In terms of academic programs, the University of Surrey offers undergraduate and postgraduate courses in accounting and finance, biosciences and medicine, physics, mechanical engineering, and others. Research courses are also offered under PhD programs, such as biomedical engineering, environment and sustainability, space engineering, and more .

The University of Surrey’s roots can be traced back to Battersea Polytechnic Institute in Battersea Park, London, which was established to extend the reach of higher education to the less fortunate. In 1956, the institute was granted the College of Advanced Technology designation. The following year, Battersea Polytechnic Institute was renamed Battersea College of Technology. Over the years, the college flourished and it was decided that the campus be moved to a larger area in order to accommodate its expansion. In 1970, the move to the new campus in Stag Hill in Guildford was finally completed. It was also the same year when the University of Surrey was finally established by Royal Charter.

Fast forward to the 21st century, the University of Surrey now houses sophisticated research centers, one of them the Surrey Space Centre, which is used for extensive research studies on small satellites. In 2015, the 5G Innovation Centre was opened to conduct further research on 5G technology, which received more than £40 million in funding from telecommunication companies all over the globe, including Huawei, Samsung, Telefonica, Vodane, Aeroflex, and more. Additionally, the university runs the Surrey Research Park, a 69-acre land dedicated to research centers for science and technology-based businesses, such as cybersecurity, computer games, electronics, and more.

The University of Surrey’s research efforts thrive through partnerships with external academic, research, and business organizations. Among them is its partnership with the National Physical Laboratory and collaboration with the Royal Surrey County Hospital on medical physics, covering radiation monitoring, medical imaging, and nuclear metrology. Furthermore, other research themes the University of Surrey focuses on revolve around lifelong health, urban living, and sustainability.
