Facts About Ulm University

Ulm University is a public research university known for its progressive approach to education and research. Situated in the German state of Baden-Württemberg, the institution is recognized for its programs in Natural Science, Computer Science, Engineering, Medicine, Economics, and Mathematics, which are also its academic faculties. It also hosts several collaborative interdisciplinary research centers within the area of its campus.

Ulm offers over 60 undergraduate and postgraduate programs and has a dedicated hospital for its medical degrees. The institution has also formed partnerships with over 80 universities in Europe, the United States, Canada, and Australia for its international exchange program. To maintain its high level of instruction, the university runs a development program for educators and hands out awards to its best teachers.

Established in 1967 by German chancellor Dr. Kurt Kiesinger, Ulm University was founded on the concept of providing novel ways to educate and do research. As such, it took an interdisciplinary approach in both areas. The school was granted university status in the same year of its founding and has grown significantly since.

As of 2020, Ulm is home to over 6,000 undergraduates, 3,000 postgraduate students, and 2,000 academic personnel. With its courses taught in German and English, the school’s student populace also counts over 1,000 learners belonging to the international community. Its notable alumni include Robert Schleip (biologist), Andreas Borchert (computer scientist), Reiner Knizia (board game designer), Sarah Straub (singer), and Albrecht Schmidt (computer scientist).

The Ulm campus sits on a hill in Ulm City, around 10 minutes away from the city center. The institution has its own library and botanical garden. It houses a research hub called Science Park, which hosts a number of research facilities and hospitals. Research at the university is largely concentrated on engineering, technology, life sciences, medicine, financial services, biomaterials, and nanotechnologies. It has forged partnerships with other institutions to foster collaborative research environments.

As the driving force of their research initiatives, Ulm looks to further energize the region’s entrepreneurial ecosystem and has taken strides to cultivate the city’s start-up culture through its teaching and research. With this, it has partnered with some of the large enterprises in the area, as students have the opportunity to work with companies like BMW and Daimler (Mercedes Benz) for their thesis.

In addition, Ulm University is a large contributor to the city’s economy. It helped Ulm City transition to the lucrative tech industry, with global companies like Nokia, Siemens, and Daimler opening research centers near the university.
