Facts About Technical University of Berlin

Technische Universität Berlin, or the Technical University of Berlin, is a public research university, the first institution in Germany to call itself a Technical University. The institution, whose beginnings can be traced back to 1770, has its main campus in Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf. It is a member of the alliance of Technical Universities in the country, the TU9. The institution is also part of the Conference of European Schools for Advanced Engineering Education and Research.

The university has seven faculties that offer 100 study programs: nine for bachelor’s degree and 95 for master’s degree. Each faculty also has a number of institutes and centers that pursue different lines of scientific inquiry. Its education is also accessible to students outside of Germany. It has a satellite campus in El Gouna, Egypt, that serves as a field office for academic and scientific endeavors. Additionally, it maintains a franchise of its Global Production Engineering and Management program in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, through the Vietnamese-German University.

For research, the Technical University of Berlin has six key areas: Digital Transformation; Photonics and Optical Systems; Urban Systems and Environmental Systems; Energy Systems, Mobility, and Sustainable Resources; Materials, Design and Manufacturing; and Human Health, Humanities, and Educational Science. Research in these subjects are interdisciplinary and are done at the international level. These form the framework of inter-faculty research activities, together with the Clusters of Excellence and Excellence Alliance.

The clusters and the alliance are approved by the federal and state governments of Germany in line with the Excellence Strategy initiative. This is a project that aims to promote outstanding research in universities and research centers. In line with that, Technische Universität Berlin has received funding for its three successful Clusters of Excellence or international research projects: Unifying Systems in Catalysis that aims to understand and use catalysis networks; MATH+, which explores how Berlin mathematics is molding the future; and Science of Intelligence, which is committed to learning more about the different types of intelligence and their underlying laws and principles.

The institution is also a part of the Berlin University Alliance, together with Freie Universität Berlin, Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin, and Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. The partners are working together in a project called “Crossing Borders” to answer social challenges, help junior scholars in their research and careers, and increase the quality and value of research in the country. This one-of-a kind alliance also tackles the comprehensive topics of diversity and gender equality, internationalization, and teaching and learning.
