Facts About National Chung Hsing University

National Chung Hsing University (NCHU), located in South District, Taichung, in the Republic of China, is a research-based university known for its comprehensive research and learning offerings. Founded in 1919, it is one of the four universities under the Taiwan Comprehensive University System. It has a long history and heritage before becoming the national university of Taiwan.

Originally called the Advanced Academy of Agronomy and Forestry, its first location was in the prefecture of Taihoku during Japanese rule. In 1928, it became an affiliate department of the Taihoku Imperial University and in 1943 it moved to the Taichū Prefecture, becoming an independent entity. After a name change to Taichung Agricultural Junior College in 1945 when Taiwan was handed over to the Republic of China, it was upgraded to become the Taichung College of Agriculture the following year. It was only in 1961 that it became known as the Chung Hsing University and ten years later, adopted its current name after being granted its national university status.

Today, it stands south of Taichung City. It has nine colleges with facilities across its 53-hectare property. These colleges include (1) Agriculture and Natural Resources, (2) Engineering, (3) Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, (4) Life Sciences, (5) Science, (6) Veterinary Medicine, (7) Liberal Arts, (8) Law and Politics, and (9) Management.

With a rich heritage in agricultural sciences, the NCHU is a participant in the Academia Sinica’s Taiwan International Graduate Program in Molecular and Biological Agricultural Sciences program. Academia Sinica is Taiwan’s national academy that supports research in a wide variety of disciplines.

Of particular interest about NCHU is its Experimental Stations and forest plantations. Its Horticultural Experiment Station and Agricultural Experiment Station provide support for the research, teaching, and learning of faculty members and studies. They also assist researchers from other universities in their studies.

Moreover, the university has four world-class research centers. These are the Biotechnology Center, the Nano Center, the Center for General Education, and the Research Center for the Humanities and Social Sciences. Like other well-respected universities, NCHU fosters an environment with a collaborative spirit towards other academic institutions and industry partners. Moreover, it engages in multidisciplinary research both in creating theories and undertaking empirical work.

For academic resources, NCHU’s Library has over 2,000 reading seats in its building with seven floors and a basement. It has a Music Channel Zone and study rooms available. To promote art and culture, the NCHU Art Center also provides a space for exhibits, talks, and performances. It houses around 500 pieces of works ranging from calligraphy to contemporary masterpieces.
