Facts About The Chinese University of Hong Kong

The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) is among the leading universities in Hong Kong as well as across Asia. It is known for its high research activity, teaching excellence, and adoption of the English language into its academic programs. Unique to the public university is its collegiate system where the colleges serve as supplementary sources of education that complement the academic structures of its faculties. CUHK is also a member of several prestigious networks, including the Association of Commonwealth Universities and the Association of Southeast Asian Institutions of Higher Learning.

Academically, CUHK is composed of nine faculties and nine colleges, with the faculties centered on subjects like business administration, engineering, law, medicine, science, and social science. It offers 76 undergraduate majors, 76 minors, 145 graduate programs, and 30 doctoral programs as well as 13 postgraduate diploma courses. Although Chinese is the official teaching vernacular, English is the most commonly used language of instruction, affording international learners plenty of options.

The university’s most highly regarded courses include communication, geography, nursing, modern languages, computer science, mathematics, and philosophy.

Research at CUHK is conducted in its 38 institutes and five key laboratories. The studies fall within four general areas, namely China studies, translational biomedicine, environment and sustainability, and information technology. Meanwhile, high priority research is condensed into nine interdisciplinary areas of excellence. As of 2019, the university has produced 3,489 journal publications, filed 315 patents, and amassed a significant number of domestic and international projects.

CUHK owns the largest university campus in Hong Kong, spanning 137.7 hectares. Its library network is composed of seven facilities that collectively carry more than 2.4 million volumes and 4.8 million eBooks. As for its other amenities, the school has residence halls that accommodate more than 9,200 students, 10 museums and galleries, over 60 sports facilities, and 10 outdoor venues of interest, including a shopping mall and a conference center.

Established in 1963, CUHK was formed through the alliance of three of its would-be-constituent colleges. The Hong Kong government intended to build a new university that used Chinese as the teaching language in 1959. This led to the development of CUHK, which originally had three faculties that specialized in science, social science, and art. In 1966, it opened the first graduate school in Hong Kong.

As of 2020, CUHK welcomes over 21,000 students and 8,100 teaching staff. It is associated with a Nobel laureate, a Fields Medalist, a Turing Award winner, 21 State National Science Award winners, and 33 IEEE fellows, among many others. The university also maintains over 280 exchange partnerships with universities from 36 countries.

CUHK aims to enhance the knowledge base and well-being of Hong Kong citizens through public service, teaching, and research. It also intends to be globally recognized as a first-rate research university.
