Facts About University of Leipzig

University of Leipzig is one of the world’s oldest universities located in the state of Saxony, Germany. It is a public research institution and considered as the second-oldest university in the country. Established in 1409, the university has engaged in teaching and research for over six centuries without interruption. It has an impressive roster of notable alumni, including Goethe, Leibniz, Friedrich Nietzsche, Robert Schumann, Leopold von Ranke, Richard Wagner, and nine Nobel Prize laureates associated with the university.

Spanning across 38 locations in Leipzig, the university's urban campuses are spread across several spots in the city, with many of its main buildings remaining in the same location since the institution’s establishment in 1409. University of Leipzig also houses some of Germany’s most important museums, including the Museum of Musical Instruments, the Museum of Ancient Egypt, and the Museum of Classical Antiquities.

In addition, the university is home to the University Library of Leipzig, one of the oldest university libraries in Germany. Established in 1543, the library’s special and extensive historical collections are recognized nationally and internationally.

Today, the university is split into 14 faculties that provide more than 150 courses. It offers students a broad selection of disciplines, from the humanities, natural sciences, law and medicine, to other fields of study.

For over 600 years, the university has been making history as one of Germany’s finest institutions. Founded by William II, Margrave of Meissen, and his brother, Frederick I, Elector of Saxony, the university was modelled after the University of Prague and consisted of four scholastic faculties.

During the early centuries after its establishment, the university opened its doors to a small number of students and operated as a regional institution. It was only in the late 19th century that Leipzig began making a name as a world-class institution of higher education and research, with many important scholars like Wilhelm Ostwald (father of modern physical chemistry) and Bernhard Windscheid (one of the fathers of the German Civil Code) serving the university’s faculty.

University of Leipzig is also one of the first universities in Germany that allowed women to attend the campus as guest students. Johanna von Evreinov, a Russian feminist writer, was recognized as the first woman to obtain a Juris Doctor degree from the university. Following the Second World War, the university, with its excellent reputation in teaching and research, attracted many renowned scholars and Nobel Prize laureates. Most of the university's alumni also became important scientists and persons acknowledged as authorities in the country’s political society.
