Facts About Saarland University

Universität des Saarlandes, or Saarland University, is a mid-sized university that has a strong research profile. Located in Saarbrücken, the center of the region of Saarland, the institution started educating students in 1948. It also has campuses in Homburg and Dudweiler. Saarland has eight subject areas and over 70 B.A., B.Sc., teacher training, state examination, and license programs.

Among the different fields of study, Saarland University is most recognized for its computer science programs. It has four university units that focus on or are related to it: the Department of Computer Science itself; the Department of Mathematics; the Department of Language Science and Technology; and the Saarbrücken Graduate School of Computer Science.

As a cutting-edge “European University,” Saarland University has 11 research institutes in the fields of computer science (4); materials science and mechatronics (4); and medicine, pharmaceutical sciences, and life sciences (3). But in the institution, the key research fields are Informatikwissenschaften (computer science); NanoBioMed - Life and Matter; and interdisciplinary European research. The latter is especially favorable because of the University’s geographic location: it sits near the borders of France, Belgium, and Luxembourg. It is also being developed further because of the Transform4Europe initiative.

For computer science, Universität des Saarlandes has multiple ongoing projects at a time. One of the research undertakings is related to personalized on-body user interfaces. These are similar to smartwatches and fitness trackers but are meant to be customized and developed to be worn as a second skin. Previous projects in the institution in this field have allowed researchers to receive accolades, particularly the Leibniz Prize.

In European studies, University researchers are looking into various topics for the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (German Research Foundation) and the European Union. Among the topics they are investigating are diversity and the resolution of differences in transcultural settings and transnational popular culture.

Aside from these, the university supports a wide range of ongoing projects of affiliate research centers situated in its vicinity.

The university’s research undertakings are made possible through funding from generous organizations. Additionally, the university supports its researchers, students, and visiting scientists with its two libraries and two archives. There are also IT services available. Students who need to copy, scan, print, and bind materials can easily access resources for those within the campus. What’s more, researchers and students alike can ensure that they do not unwittingly plagiarize the work of others with the university’s anti-plagiarism software.
