Facts About North Carolina State University

North Carolina State University (NCSU) is a public research university in Raleigh, North Carolina with a land grant charter. The largest of its kind in the Carolinas, the NCSU was founded in 1887 through the acts of the North Carolina legislature.

NCSU is renowned for its colleges in engineering, statistics, life sciences and agriculture, education, design, veterinary medicine and management. Its textile academic program is also the only specialty course of its kind in the United States. The university offers master’s studies in over a hundred fields and more than 60 doctoral programs.

As a research institute, NCSU is categorized with “a very high research activity.” The university, in fact, comprises the “Research Triangle” in the state, along with Duke University and The University of North Carolina.

NCSU started as a land-grant college in 1887, the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts. Its initial academic programs centered around liberal and practical education with a focus on agriculture and mechanical arts, plus military tactics and classical studies on the side. In 1917, the college was renamed “North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering.

In 1931, the college was merged with the University of North Carolina, NC State and the Women’s College, and renamed once again as The University of North Carolina. The merger would see the expansion of more schools in the university, such as the School of Architecture and Landscape Design in 1947, the School of Education in 1948 and the School of Forestry in 1950. The university’s current name was approved in 1965.

Today, NCSU offers a wide range of undergraduate and graduate degrees through its numerous colleges and schools. These include the College of Natural Resources, College of Education, College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, College of Engineering, Poole College of Management, College of Veterinary Medicine, College of Sciences and Wilson College of Textiles and the Graduate School.

The university also offers special courses in entrepreneurship, business management for engineers and writing workshops.

As a research institute, NCSU manages the Plants for Human Health Institute and hosts a faculty of experts in the fields of horticultural science, plant and microbial biology, agricultural and resource economics, genetics and bioprocessing and nutrition sciences.

Notable alumni include luminaries in politics, business, the military and academics, including Jeff Williams (COO of Apple), John Edwards (former U.S. senator) and General William Lee (“Father of the U.S. Airborne”).
