Facts About Bar-Ilan University
Bar-Ilan University is a public research university situated in Ramat Gan in Tel Aviv, Israel. As the country’s second-largest academic institution, the university offers a wide range of bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees, as well as certificate and continuing education programs, including the country’s most extensive in-service teacher training program. Aside from the main campus just outside the city of Tel Aviv, the university also operates six regional colleges spread across Israel.
The university is composed of students with varying religious and cultural backgrounds— Jews, non-Jews, locals, and immigrants. It also boasts of a multi-faceted academic staff. This represents the diversity of Israel as a whole, which leads to the exchange of ideas between every member of the institution.
Bar-Ilan University was established in 1955. The idea for the university was conceived in a meeting between the members of the American Mizrahi organization held in Atlanta, Georgia in the United States in 1950. The university was then founded by the American Orthodox rabbi Professor Pinkhos Churgin, who also served as the institution’s president from its establishment until 1957. When the university opened, The New York Times described it as the cultural link between America and Israel.
Named after the Zionist leader Rabbi Meir Bar-Ilan, the university quickly developed. As a result, the Israel Council for Higher Education formally recognized the university 14 years after it was founded. Currently, the university is composed of eight schools: Jewish Studies, Life Sciences, Social Sciences, Exact Sciences, Humanities, Engineering, Medicine, and Law. The institution also offers interdisciplinary studies, giving learners more freedom in planning and shaping their academic journey.
In 2007, Bar-Ilan received the Israel Prize for its online Responsa project. In 2010, the QS Global 200 Business Schools Report named the university as the 4th best business school in the Middle East and Africa. Furthermore, Bar-Ilan is also home to The Leslie and Susan Gonda Multidisciplinary Brain Research Center. Focusing on a multidisciplinary approach to neuroscience, the research center houses more than 30 laboratories designed to study brain complexity at multiple levels.
